St Xavier 7's Rugby win State Championship

Championship Sunday

November 8, championship Sunday for the St Xavier Rugby 7's team, the accumulation of 4 weeks of hard-fought rugby matches against Moeller, Dayton, Walnut Hills, Perrysburg and Hillard, let alone preseason going back to August.  A few injuries and absentees to key influential seniors begged the question, Could St Xavier reach the dizzy heights of the State Champions.

On a day made for grill outs and pool parties the Bombers sweated through temperatures exceeding 80 f. The Bombers continued their winning knack of recent weeks by initially beating Moeller 26-15 and Hilliard 31-12 in pretty much routine fashion. Coach's Haber and Grote rotated the majority of eligible squad players to ensure that the best and fittest could play against Dayton in the final, the 2019 State Rugby 7's champions.

With only 7 minutes each half in this fast paced sport a quick start was extremely important and to the shock of the Dayton players they found themselves  12-0 within 3 minutes, A great team try was finished by Sean Face who also converted the extra 2 points and a fine interception by Dan Boller really got the supporters excited. A serious injury to a Dayton player delayed the continuation of the game for 25 minutes but needless to say the Bombers continued where they had left of, a converted try by Jacob Sizemore before halftime left the score at 19-0.

The second half saw some extra fight from Dayton as they tried to get back into the game, they scored two tries and one conversion. This wasn't going to be enough on a day that saw some stand out tackling from William A'Hearn, Face and Sizemore. The second half also saw an additional bulldozing run try from Sizemore and two fine individual tries by Daniel Gunderson on the wing who out sprinted many desperate Dayton defenders.

To be honest, with the exceptional start to the game along with the organization and fitness of all the Bomber players the win was never in doubt, the final score was a well-deserved 38 – 12. In recognition of his two pacey tries, tackling and work rate the MVP for the match was Daniel Gunderson.
