Bombers win back-to-back state titles in back and forth victory over St. Ignatius

The Bombers looked to roll to their second straight division state title as they traveled to historic crew stadium following a gritty 8-7 win over opposite one seed Upper Arlington in the semifinal where the team met its match on both sides of the ball. St. Ignatius entered this game with a dominant 12-5 win over Dublin Jerome in the state semifinal.

At the opening whistle, St. Ignatius grabbed the opening face off. They would slowly control the possession to open the game. Both sides would put some shots on the net but to no result to open the game. The Wildcats what open the scoring with a wrap around goal with 9:01 to go in the first quarter. 30 seconds later Stegbauer stormed down the field sending in a shot of his that would be saved and quickly spat out for a transition bounce shot goal to give the Bombers a 2-0 lead early on with 8:31 to go in the first quarter. Senior August Betz would take no time to respond back for the Bombers grinding in to cut the deficit to 2-1 with 8:06 to go.

St. Ignatius would respond immediately after a turnover on the face off with a quick driving shot by the Wildcats to push the score to 3-1 with 7:41 in the first quarter. St. Ignatius would try to kill time but would turn it over at about the five minute mark. The Bombers would constantly put pressure on the Wildcats with three missed shots from the Bombers. Sophomore standout goalie would nab this first save of the game with 4:07 to go. The Bombers would push the tempo with a quick missed shot to hold the ball in Wildcat territory. The Wildcats would get a reversal call on them with 3 minutes to go as the Bombers would storm down the field led by junior Nick Rongo who would send a screamer off the post. Junior Ethan Cole would pick up the missed shot and drive in for the put back goal for the Bombers to cut the deficit to 3-2 with 2:47 to go.

Ignatius would continue to respond back to the Bombers as they'd retain the possession immediately starting with an attack behind X that would turn into a perfectly executed goal off a screen to give the Wildcats a 4-2 from Wildcats star midfielder Micheal McManamon for his first goal of the game with 1:50 left in the quarter. McManamon the Yale commit, would show off why he's an incoming Bulldog, as he'd evade three Bomber defenders to extend the Wildcat lead to 5-2 with seconds to go in the first quarter.

Headed into the second quarter the Bombers looked fired up after being down three. The Bombers would open up firing with two quick shots before senior D.J. Frazier would cut the lead down to two immediately on a 20 yard strike with 11:13 to go in the half. The Bombers wouldn't be down early on as Betz would add his second goal of the ball game with a top left bullet into the net to cut the deficit to 5-4. With 9:20 Carpenter would add his second save of the game creating a transition opportunity for the Bombers. With senior Roman Dean converting on a 1v1 with the keeper to tie the game for the Bombers with 9:14 left in the half.

The Bombers would grab the lead after senior Rowdy Scheer would speed down the field with a missed shot that would be scooped up by senior Ryder Munz for a wrap around goal to give the Bombers a 4-0 run to start the second quarter. Ignatius would kill time to keep the ball out of the sticks of the red hot Bomber offense. The Bombers took full advantage of the Wildcats six turnovers this half to open up the scoring in the second quarter. After their sixth turnover of the game the Bombers rushed down the field before a off ball push call would reset the Bomber offense. Betz would open an opportunity for the Bombers as he would draw a double team for an open feed to Cole to add his second goal to the stat sheet as the Bomber would extend their lead to 7-5 with 5:30 to go in the half. Both teams would look to change strategies to keep momentum for both sides as either side would fail to score as the first half would end with the Bombers holding 7-5 lead. The Bombers looked to control the face off heading into the second half as the Wildcats owned nine face off wins to senior Max Violets four.

After a quiet early offensive game from the Wildcats, Carpenter would try to hit Scheer that would go awry where the ball would roll to Rongo where he'd give the Bombers an 8-5 lead with 9:39 to go in the third quarter. Carpenter would continue to play excellent for the Bombers with a great split save with eight minutes to go in the third. Frazier would feed Munz for his second goal to push the lead to 9-5 heading into the fourth quarter. The Bombers looked to hold on with 12 minutes left to go to hoist the trophy.

Cole would secure a hat trick as he'd fake his way for the Bombers 10th goal of the game 40 seconds into the quarter. With two minutes left in the game Frazier would draw the keeper out for an easy feed to Munz to extend the Bomber lead to 11-5. The Wildcats however wouldn't go away without a fight as they'd punch a goal back to cut the lead to 11-6 after an early jump from Violet would give the Wildcats a quick goal with 1:54 to go. McManamon would give them their second straight goal to cut the lead to 11-7 with a minute and half to go. The Bombers wouldn't let off the gas scoring with Frazier adding his second goal of the game for the Bombers to put the lead back to 12-7. Cole would put the nail in the coffin for the Bombers scoring an empty net goal with less than a minute to go for his fourth goal of the ball game as they clock hit double zeroes the Bombers would grab their second straight state title with a 13-7 win over the Wildcats.
