Bombers outlast Upper Arlington to punch ticket to State Championship

6/4/2026 12:19:00 PM

The stakes could not have been higher Wednesday night at Mason High School as two of Ohio's premier high school lacrosse titans collided in the OHSAA Division I state semifinals. Defending state champion St. Xavier squared off against top-seeded Upper Arlington in a match where neither side had dropped a single game to an in-state opponent all season. In a classic postseason duel that matched the immense hype, the Bombers rode a explosive first-half offensive blitz and a disciplined defensive stand to survive a furious second-half rally, securing a thrilling 8-7 victory over the Golden Bears to punch their ticket back to the state championship game.

The contest began with fire and fury from St. Xavier. The Bombers caught Upper Arlington completely off guard out of the gate, executing their offensive sets with clinical precision. Capitalizing on early possession and winning crucial faceoffs, St. Xavier stunned the Golden Bears with a relentless 5-0 scoring run to open the game. Ryder Munz was the catalyst for the early onslaught, carving through the Upper Arlington defense to record a spectacular first-half hat trick. August Betz provided the perfect complement to the attack, finding the back of the net twice during the opening surge. The rapid-fire explosion left the top-seeded Golden Bears reeling and gave the Bomber faithful every reason to believe a blowout was in the making.

However, Upper Arlington was playing with a purpose that extended far beyond a spot in the state finals. The Golden Bears entered the match navigating an incredibly emotional week following the passing of legendary former head coach Ted Wolford at the age of 66. Wolford, a towering figure in Ohio lacrosse history, had guided the program to 16 state championships over 24 seasons before stepping down in 2016. Playing on a field that already bore his name, the Golden Bears community was grieving, and that emotional weight translated into a fierce, unwavering resilience on the turf.

Refusing to let their season end quietly, Upper Arlington began to chip away at the deficit before the halftime whistle. All-American and Cornell University commit Luke Backes put the team on his back, utilizing his speed and size to break through the Bombers' defensive shell. Backes delivered two critical goals in the final two minutes of the second quarter to breathe life back into the Golden Bears' sideline. With just seconds remaining before the buzzer, Pete Dusseau slammed home an exclamation mark of a goal, completely shifting the game's momentum and cutting the St. Xavier lead to 5-3 heading into the locker room.

The defensive units took center stage in the third quarter, turning the semifinal into a physical, tactical chess match. Upper Arlington's coaching staff adjusted their schemes to limit Munz and Betz, while the Golden Bears' midfield began dominating time of possession. Upper Arlington scored the lone goal of the third frame, stifling the St. Xavier offense and tightening the score to 5-4 to set up a dramatic final period.

In the fourth quarter, the tension reached a boiling point. St. Xavier managed to stop the bleeding briefly when Spencer Stegbauer found an opening and scored, giving the Bombers a temporary two-goal cushion. But Upper Arlington's offense, fed by an energetic, traveling crowd, countered immediately. In a stunning span of less than 60 seconds, Zeke Winklevoss and Parker Old beat the Bomber defense on consecutive possessions, leveling the score at 6-6 with under six minutes remaining on the clock.

With all the momentum squarely on the side of the Golden Bears and the game seemingly slipping away, St. Xavier head coach Nate Sprong's emphasis on season-long resiliency was put to the ultimate test. The Bombers did not blink. Responding to the pressure like the reigning champions they are, Ethan Cole and DJ Frazier answered the call. The duo scored back-to-back goals in quick succession near the five-minute mark, instantly wrestling back an 8-6 advantage for St. Xavier. Backes managed to drill one final shot into the net to bring Upper Arlington back within one and ensure a frantic finish, but the St. Xavier defense held firm in the final minutes to run out the clock and seal the 8-7 victory.

The defining story of the night was the performance of the St. Xavier defensive unit, which successfully contained an Upper Arlington offense loaded with future NCAA Division I talent. Despite the Golden Bears controlling the ball for the majority of the evening, sophomore goalkeeper Sam Carpenter anchored a spectacular backline effort, turning away a barrage of shots down the stretch.

With the bittersweet defeat, a phenomenal senior class caps off Upper Arlington's season at 18-4 overall. Meanwhile, the 19-1 Bombers move on to defend their crown on the ultimate stage. St. Xavier advances to the Division I state championship game against Cleveland St. Ignatius, scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at Historic Crew Stadium in Columbus.
