The road to a state championship is rarely a straight line, but for St. Xavier's Carson Dwyer and Nihal Narisetty, it was a masterclass in peak performance when the stakes were highest.
Entering the 2026 OHSAA Division I state doubles tournament, the Bombers' top duo carried both the weight of a legendary program and the momentum of a dominant regular season. That preparation culminated in a flawless weekend at the Lindner Family Tennis Center, capped off by a commanding 6-1, 6-4 straight-set victory over North Royalton to capture the individual state doubles crown.
Dwyer, a senior, and Narisetty, a junior, showcased the perfect blend of veteran poise and aggressive net play throughout the bracket. After battling past St. Edward in the opening rounds and dispatching Massillon Jackson in the state semifinals, the tandem refused to let North Royalton establish any rhythm in the final. By locking down the 6-1, 6-4 victory, they sealed St. Xavier's status at the top of Ohio's individual ranks.
However, the celebrating was short-lived. Instead of an emotional hangover, the newly crowned state champions immediately had to pivot from individual glory back into the trenches of team warfare.
Just hours after hoisting their doubles trophy, Dwyer and Narisetty shifted to singles play to lead the Bombers into the Ohio Tennis Coaches Association (OTCA) Division I team final against a lethal Olentangy Orange squad. St. Xavier had punched its ticket to the afternoon final by dispatching University School in the morning semifinals, setting up a historic collision course.
The team championship carried immense historical weight for the Bombers, who had not captured the OTCA state title since the conclusion of the program's legendary four-peat era in 2009.
With a 17-year drought on the line, Dwyer and Narisetty set a ferocious pace at the top of the lineup. Both standouts stormed through their opening singles sets with flawless 6-0 performances, putting the Pioneers on their heels early. At the remaining singles spot, Jonah Johnson provided critical depth, battling to a gritty 3-2 lead in his opening set to tilt the court entirely in Cincinnati's favor.
Olentangy Orange mounted a fierce counter-attack on the doubles courts, forcing St. Xavier to rely on the depth that has defined its roster all spring. At No. 1 doubles, the pairing of Conor Lynch and Henry Brandt faced early adversity, trailing 3-2 in the first set before making the tactical adjustments necessary to stabilize the match. Meanwhile, the No. 2 doubles tandem of Gus Demis and David Ivanov seized momentum with clinical net play to secure an early 3-2 advantage of their own.
The relentless pressure across all five courts proved too much for the Pioneers to withstand. St. Xavier ultimately locked down the three necessary match points to secure a 3-1 victory, sparking a massive celebration on the Mason courts.
"To bring the team state trophy back to St. X for the first time since 2009 is something these guys will remember for the rest of their lives," St. Xavier head coach Joe Jackson said. "They didn't just play for themselves this weekend; they played for the legacy of the program. They earned every bit of it."
With the dual victories, the 2026 Bombers completed a historic sweep of the highest honors in Ohio high school tennis, firmly cementing this roster among the all-time elite eras on North Bend Road.
