Wrestling Caps Off Regular Season With 3rd Place GCL Finish
Â
The Bombers wrapped up their regular season this past weekend with the GCL Quad at Moeller High School. They began the afternoon facing Moeller, the top seed. While the Bombers were able to score the most points of any GCL team in the Dual (22 points), they ultimately lost 57-22. Victories for the Bombers came at 120 lbs with Vinny Soloria (Major Decision), 138 lbs with Kane Shawger (Pin), 175 lbs with Magnus Violet (Pin), and 190 lbs with Rocco Pusateri (Pin).
Next, the Bombers faced the Elder Panthers. The Bombers started strong, but several matches turned in the wrong direction, causing the score to look worse than it seemed. Additionally, the Bombers had to deal with some forfeits as they prepared for the final dual of the day. Despite this, the Panthers emerged victorious 58-22. Wins for the Bombers came from 138 lbs with Kane Shawger (Pin), 144 lbs with Tommy Maney (Major Decision), 175 lbs with Magnus Violet (Pin), and 190 lbs with Rocco Pusateri (Pin).
The final dual of the day saw the Bombers take on the 3-time defending GCL Champion and District Champion La Salle Lancers. This dual came down to the final match to determine the winner. The match started at 126 lbs, where La Salle won, followed by another win at 132 lbs. The Bombers then picked up wins at 138 lbs with Jake Ryan (FF), 144 lbs with Kane Shawger (FF), and 150 lbs with Tommy Maney (Major Decision), putting the Bombers ahead 16-11. However, the Lancers pinned at 157 lbs. Maverick Schierloh (Pin) got the Bombers rolling again, followed by a pin from Magnus Violet at 175 lbs, which put the Bombers back in the lead at 28-17. La Salle pinned at 190 lbs, but then 215 lbs with Rocco Pusateri (Tech Fall) evened things up. The Lancers' heavyweight then pinned. Freshman 106 lbs Oliver Johnson secured a pin, making it 39-29. La Salle pinned at 113 lbs, bringing the score to 39-35 heading into the final match at 120 lbs.
In a tight match, sophomore Vinny Soloria faced a former state placer whom he had pinned earlier in the season. With the score tied 6-6, Soloria managed to escape with just seconds left to secure a 7-6 victory. This win gave the Bombers their first GCL victory in a long time, securing them a 3rd place finish in the GCL.
