St. Xavier Golf Wins GCL Championship for 10th Year in a Row
The 2024 GCL golf season is completed after four 18-hole rounds of golf played at various times since August 13th. The Bombers had a 21-shot lead at the halfway point then lost 8 shots to Elder in round 3. The final round was played Sunday, September 22nd at Pipestone Golf Club, site of the SWOH Districts, and this was the closest GCL in 10 years. St. Xavier tied with Elder in the final round at 301, Moeller right on their tails at 303, and LaSalle at 334. As a result, St. Xavier wins the GCL with a total of 1188, Elder 1201, Moeller 1242, and LaSalle 1305.
All 7 golfers for St. Xavier who participated in at least two of the four legs earned either 1st or 2nd Team GCL Honors. The 1st Team Honors include senior captain Michael Stagnaro (2nd overall), sophomore Eli Moore (4th overall), senior captain George Baker, senior Ben Zieker, and sophomore Patrick Paquette. 2nd Team Honors for the Bombers went to senior captain Tanner Berry and junior Owen Sedgwick.
The GCL Player of the Year for an unprecedented 3rd Year in a Row went to Cayse Morgan of Elder who shot 10 under par over the 72 holes.
There are a few remaining tournaments for the Varsity championship group this weekend including historic and prestigious Firestone Country Club in Akron and then Districts will be Monday October 7th at Pipestone Golf Course.
