Hockey Opens Season with Win at Bishop Noll Invitational

Bomber Hockey opened their season this weekend with a trip up to Hammond, Indiana to compete in the Bishop Noll Invitational held at the Kube Sports Complex.

The Bombers opened up pool play with a convincing 5-2 victory over Louisville St. Xavier High School on Friday night. They proceeded to split a pair of games on Saturday, falling to host Bishop Noll Institute (IN) by a score of 7-4 before recovering to take a 4-1 win over St. Joseph High School (IN) to qualify for championship play the following day.

Head Coach Bob Bove's squad recovered nicely to take a 4-1 win over Bishop Noll in the rematch on Sunday morning.

The Bombers then took on North Catholic High School out of Philadelphia in the championship game.

Matt Langenderfer helped the Bombers strike first in the finals when he burried a pass from Brian O'Connor int he back of the net to take a 1-0 lead. North Catholic would respond moments later, leading to a 1-1 score that lasted into the 3rd period until the Langenderfer returned the favor, sending a pass that led to an O'Connor goal and a 2-1 lead. Christopher Heekin all but put the finishing touches on the game, scoring a goal with 2:43 left to extend the Bomber lead to 3-1.

North Catholic pulled their goal and was finally able to muster a goal with 4.5 seconds left, but it was too little too late as the Bombers left the ice victorious.

Bomber goalie Joey Rusnak earned Player of the Game honors for the championship and Brian O'Connor was named to the All-Tournament team.

Bomber Hockey sits at 4-1 on the young season as they hit the road again next weekend to Bowling Green State University for a pair of contests.
