PHILADELPHIA — The St. Xavier track and field program wrapped up its historic outdoor campaign with a series of elite performances at the New Balance Nationals Outdoor Championships at Franklin Field, showcasing its national-caliber depth across both individual and relay events.
Led by senior standout and Indiana University signee Dom Ellis, the Bombers consistently challenged the fastest prep fields in the country, earning prominent positions on the national leaderboard.
Ellis Secures All-American Honors in 2-Mile Championship
Spearheading the individual efforts for the Bombers, Ellis capped off his decorated high school career with a podium finish in the Championship Boys 2 Mile. Navigating a highly competitive field, Ellis crossed the line in a personal-best 9:00.69 to finish sixth overall and earn All-American honors.
Ellis employed a calculated race strategy, passing the 1,618-meter mark in 4:30.79 before unleashing a strong closing kick to secure his place among the top six finishers. Kavi Gibson of Cary Academy won the national title in 8:50.00.
Distance Medley Relay Battles to Top-10 Finish
The Bombers carried their postseason momentum into the Championship Boys Distance Medley Relay, an event requiring strategic precision across the 1,200-, 400-, 800- and 1,600-meter legs.
The St. Xavier quartet of Liam Holman, Jack Gunn, Aidan Dehring and Ellis fought through heavy traffic to clock 10:02.31, finishing seventh overall. The performance highlighted the versatility of the veteran group, including Gunn's critical 400-meter leg and strong middle-distance efforts from Holman and Dehring.
4x800 Relay Tests Elite Depth
Rounding out their ambitious weekend schedule, the Bombers competed in the Championship Boys 4x800-meter relay. Entering the meet after running a season-best 7:42.84 in a runner-up finish at the OHSAA Division I state championships, the veteran group of Holman, Dehring, Jake Molas and Adam Thompson once again tested itself against one of the nation's deepest fields.
Despite intense lane traffic and the challenges of a high-level national meet, the veteran-heavy lineup showcased the resilience and depth that have become a hallmark of the St. Xavier distance program.
The weekend concluded a significant chapter for the program's departing seniors while providing valuable national experience for returning athletes such as Holman, Dehring and Louis as the Bombers look ahead to the 2027 campaign.
