Bombers look to get revenge in regional semifinals against the Panthers

A high-stakes Greater Catholic League rivalry takes center stage in the regional semifinals as the St. Xavier Bombers prepare to square off against the Elder Panthers on Wednesday afternoon. The single-elimination postseason match up at Miami University marks the fourth meeting of the season between the two Cincinnati powerhouses. Elder won the regular-season trilogy two games to one, but St. Xavier enters the semifinal with substantial momentum after a dominant 8-3 victory over Lakota West to capture the district championship. Elder punched its ticket to the regional semifinal via a 2-0 shutout of Beavercreek, setting up a highly anticipated win-or-go-home rematch.

The regular-season series between these familiar foes was decided by razor-thin margins, featuring a combined 30 runs across three tightly contested match ups that showcased both explosive offenses and gritty pitching performances. St. Xavier claimed the opening game of the series on April 6, pounding out nine hits in an 8-7 thriller. The Bombers jumped out to early leads but truly found their rhythm in the middle frames, executing a crucial three-run fifth inning and manufacturing a clutch insurance run in the sixth. That extra run proved necessary to outlast a furious late-game rally by the Panthers, who clawed back with four runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth before the Bombers closed the door.

Elder evened the series on April 20, capitalizing on defensive miscues to secure a 5-3 victory. The Panthers relied on disciplined situational hitting and a standout performance from junior Jack Rosenacker, who put on an absolute clinic by going 3-for-3 at the plate with a double, a stolen base, and two runs batted in. St. Xavier struggled to find a rhythm against the Elder pitching staff, managing only five hits on the day. While the Bombers put together a spirited three-run surge in the top of the sixth inning to close the gap, the damage had already been done via a three-run fifth inning by Elder, and the structural deficit proved too much to overcome.

The April 22 finale was a classic league duel that came down to the final frames. The Bombers appeared primed to take the series early, exploding for a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The early fireworks were highlighted by a massive three-run home run from senior Jack Ryan, which injected immediate energy into the dugout. However, Elder junior Caleb McComas showed immense resilience on the mound. After the rocky opening frame, McComas completely settled down and kept the Bomber hitters guessing for the remainder of the contest, ultimately throwing a complete-game six-hit gem. As McComas held the line, the Panthers slowly chipped away at the lead, scoring three runs in the third inning to tie it before manufacturing the game-winning run in the fifth to steal a 4-3 victory.

For the Bombers to exact revenge and move on to the regional finals, the lineup must solve Elder's formidable pitching depth. McComas has already proven his ability to keep the Bombers off balance, and he enters this match up fresh off a brilliant four-hit shutout against Beavercreek. The Bomber hitters cannot afford to stall after the early innings; they must maintain plate discipline, work deep counts, and string together hits through the middle and late frames to force the Panthers into their bullpen.

Additionally, the pitching staff must find a way to contain Rosenacker, who has acted as the definitive catalyst for the Elder offense all season. Navigating his appearances with care, avoiding free passes, and limiting his opportunities to create chaos on the basepaths will be vital to keeping the Panthers' run production static.

Finally, defensive execution will likely dictate the ultimate outcome of this regional semifinal. St. Xavier struggled fundamentally in its two regular-season losses to Elder, committing a combined five errors that extended innings and gifted the Panthers unearned runs. Playing clean, mistake-free baseball behind the starting rotation is paramount if the Bombers hope to ground the Panthers and prolong their postseason run.
