Bombers cap off historic season with second state title since 2003

The Bombers looked to make history Friday evening as it had been 22 years since the baseball program has reached the state title game. The energy was electric at Credit Union Park as the Bombers entered this game high off a 5-0 rout of Olentangy Orange in the state semifinal game where senior Jack Ryan was electric on the mound keeping the Pioneers guessing on every pitch. The Bombers were ready to roll as they faced GCL rival the Archbishop Moeller Crusaders where they held a 2-1 record against the Crusaders in the regular season.

The Bombers came out firing to open the game after two quick outs, Ryan smashed a two out double to left field to allow the red hot senior Jackson Sherrard to drive him home on a hard hit double to left field to give the Bombers a 1-0 lead heading into the bottom half of the inning. Taking the rubber for the big game was reliable right handed junior Liam McGeady. McGeady would get a clean inning of work with his first out coming on a Crusader trying to stretch a single into a double before locking up the next batter looking on a strikeout and a ground out to end the inning.

The Bombers would strand a runner in the second inning as freshman Cam Shaefer would slap a two out single to center before the Bombers would end the inning with a popout to center. McGeady continued to be on as he'd pick up two strikeouts in the second as he'd continue to hold the Crusader offense in check headed into the third. Senior Dillon Brus would smack a leadoff single to left field to open the third but the Bombers would strand two after a one out intentional walk to Ryan with one out. McGeady would pick up his fourth strikeout of the ball game in the third with a smooth 1-2-3 inning ending the inning with a routine fly out junior Logan Von Hoelle in center.

Sophomore Dominick Dials led off the fourth shooting a single into center field. The Bombers would bring in junior Thomas George to run for Dials as he'd advance to second on a ground out. With one out, the Bombers would make their second move of the inning, calling on junior Cullen O'Brien to pinch hit for Schaefer. The move would prove to be the right one as O'Brien would slap an RBI single to center field where he'd reach third on a throwing error. The Bombers would tack on another run with a sacrifice fly from sophomore Sam Sprengard to give the Bombers a 3-0 lead headed into the middle of the fourth. After a lead off walk by McGeady, he'd let his defense work behind him forcing a double play and a fly out to Von Hoelle to end the inning.

The Bombers would be sat down in order headed into the fifth with two ground outs and a fly out. McGeady continued to look sharp as the game would go on opening the inning with a ground out before hitting the next batter he'd settle back in with his fifth punch out of the ball game. He'd pick off the runner to end the frame as the Bombers continued to hold a 4-0 lead going into the sixth.

The Bombers would go down in order in back-to-back innings with three straight ground outs. The Crusaders would take advantage of their pitching two straight shutout innings in the bottom half of the sixth, after a forcing a fly out to start the inning, the Crusaders load the bases with three straight singles. The Crusaders would get on the board slapping a single to left to cut the deficit to 3-1. They'd follow that up with a sac fly to center field to cut the deficit to 3-2 headed into the top of the seventh.

After Schaefer was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, Brus would slap a one out single to put runners on the corners for senior Braden Bricking to extend the lead. He'd hit a sacrifice fly to give the Bombers a 4-2 lead going into the final inning. The Bombers would call on dominant sophomore closer Sam Vovak to shut down the Crusaders. Vovak wouldn't disappoint sitting the Crusaders down in order. To help the Bombers win their second state title in program history since 2003. The Bombers would finish the season with a 27-5 record two wins off the school best in history.
