The St. Xavier Bombers varsity volleyball team saw their remarkable postseason run come to a heartbreaking end on Saturday, May 23, 2026, falling just short of a state tournament berth in a grueling, four-set regional final battle against the Moeller Crusaders. Despite an extraordinary, career-defining performance from senior standout Joe Taggart, the Bombers were unable to edge out their Greater Catholic League (GCL) rivals, dropping the match 1-3.
With a spot in the state semifinals on the line, the contest was defined by razor-thin margins, with every single set decided by three points or fewer. St. Xavier repeatedly pushed Moeller to the brink, but the Crusaders managed to execute in the closing moments of each frame to secure the regional title.
The Bombers went toe-to-toe with the Crusaders right out of the gate in the opening frame. St. Xavier pushed the action well past the standard limit, fighting off set points before Moeller finally claimed a grueling 25-27 decision. Keeping the pressure high in the second set, St. Xavier maintained a potent offensive rhythm but again fell just a few plays short in the execution phase, dropping a tight 23-25 game.
Refusing to let their season end in a sweep, the Bombers demonstrated immense resilience in the third period. In another extended, high-pressure frame, St. Xavier rallied to take the set 28-26, keeping their championship dreams alive and swinging momentum completely back to their sideline. The final frame was another closely contested defensive battle, but Moeller ultimately halted the Bombers' comeback bid, sealing the regional championship with a 22-25 victory.
While the team result was a painful conclusion to the year, the individual performances on the court showcased the high-caliber talent that defined St. Xavier's season. Senior standout Joe Taggart put on an absolute masterclass in his final high school match, exploding for a staggering 33 kills on 76 total attacks while contributing 8 digs and 3 blocks. He carried a massive workload for the offense, which was brilliantly orchestrated by junior setter Leo Miller, who dished out 42 assists. Junior setter Will Payton also provided valuable relief, contributing 13 assists to the attack.
Defensively, senior libero Luke Sorce anchored the backline for the final time in his prep career, turning in a phenomenal, game-high 21 digs. At the net, freshman Ben Ferris showed a bright future for the program by stepping up under pressure to tally 8 kills and a team-high 4 blocks, while senior Ben Adkins chipped in heavily with 9 kills. Junior Gunnar Peterson also provided a massive spark from the baseline, accounting for 3 of the team's 4 aces alongside his 5 kills.
Ultimately, the difference in the regional final came down to unforced errors. The Bombers put together an incredibly potent offensive performance, racking up 57 total kills over the four sets and losing by a cumulative total of just five points across the entire day. However, St. Xavier struggled from the service line, committing 20 service errors over the four frames. Against a disciplined opponent like Moeller, those surrendered points proved too costly to sustain in a match of this magnitude.
Though the loss in the regional finals cuts short their ultimate goal, the Bombers conclude a stellar spring campaign marked by elite resilience, high-powered offense, and a deep tournament run that sets a powerful standard for the program's returning talent.
