The St. Xavier Bombers (19-5, 5-4 in the Greater Catholic League) hosted the Fairfield Indians (15-10, 11-7 in the Greater Miami Conference) for Senior night in a tough 8-5 loss to the Indians that were plagued by five errors. The Bombers looked to capitalize off their recent 5-2 win over Edgewood in which senior
Jack Ryan struck out 12 batters and sophomore
Griffin Doxsey exploded for 4 RBIs and a home run.
Starting on the hill for the Bombers was left-handed senior
Matthew Schafer. He'd have a smooth seven pitch inning to start the game forcing two pop outs and a ground out. On the hill for the Indians was senior strikeout leader Alex Brehm. Brehm started off to a slow start with an opening walk to senior
Dillon Brus. After a failed pick off attempt Brus would show why he's dangerous on the base pads swiping both second and third getting in Brehm's head forcing him to senior
Braden Bricking.
With no outs and runners on the corners Ryan stepped up to the plate and plated the first run of the game on a sac fly to center. The Bombers continued to be aggressive on the pads as Bricking would always swipe second and third allowing him to be driven home by senior
Jackson Sherrard on another sac fly to left giving the Bombers a 2-0 lead going into the second. Schafer would cruise to another smooth inning with a fly out, ground out, walk, and ground out. The Bombers would end the second stranding a runner after a two out single from senior
William Sweeney.
Headed into the third, Schafer forced a ground out for the first out of the innings. The Indians would respond with a bunt single which would be followed up by an error that would move the runner to third with one out allowing the Indians to cut the deficit to 2-1 on a sac fly. The Bombers would respond back in the bottom half as Brus would pick up his second walk of the game. Brus would continue to get in Brehm's head forcing three pickoff attempts before Bricking would score him home on an RBI double to right field to extend the lead to 3-1 into the fourth.
The Bombers would call on junior
Charlie Johnston to keep the score in check as he'd open the fourth with an opening walk, after an error and back-to-back fly outs, Fairfield would cut the deficit down with a two out RBI double to sit 3-2 going into the bottom of the fourth. The Indians would continue to get after Johnston tying the game, starting with a one out single before a wild pitch would move the runner to second and with two outs Fairfield would continue to hit well under pressure knotting the game at 3-3 on a line drive single to center.
The Bombers failed to respond stranding Ryan on second after a two out double let to an inning ending ground out. The Bombers would bring in their second reliever of the game as they'd look to junior
Ryan Krause to keep the score in tack. However, the Indians had other plans, as they'd open the inning forcing a free pass and moving the runner to second on a ground out before putting the runners on the corners with one out on a bloop single to left. Fairfield would take their first lead of the game after sac bunt would turn into an error single from Sherrard Krause would stop the bleeding forcing a pop out and strikeout as Fairfield would hold a 4-3 lead going into the sixth.
The Bombers continued to fight in the bottom half of the inning, after a pop out to begin the inning, the Bombers would threaten with one out after a walk to sophomore
Dominick Dials and single by Doxsey the Bombers forced Fairfield to finally go to the pen in the sixth. Sweeney would follow with a strikeout and with two outs after a wild pitch and a Doxsey steal with runners on second and third junior
Cullen O'Brien would strand them striking out to end the inning.
Fairfield would blow the game open in the seventh, opening with a two base error to begin the inning followed by a wild pitch and four pitch walk to put runners on the corners. The Indians would take advantage of the Bomber mistakes driving home the first run of the inning on a hard hit grounder into right field. The Bomber would call on sophomore
Graham Uran to limit the damage. After striking out the next batter, the Bombers defense would fall apart as they'd give up their second run of the inning on passed strike three call that would allow the batter to reach and a throwing error by Sherrard to extend their lead to 6-3. They'd tack on the third run of the inning on a ground out to third. With two outs, Fairfield continued to inflict damage on their final out dropping a blooping single in front of Doxsey to extend their lead to 8-3.
The Bombers looked to dig themselves out the hole, opening the inning with an infield single by Brus. after a fly out from Bricking, Ryan would come off the bench and hit an RBI triple before scoring on a ground out to cut the deficit to 8-5. The Bombers late rally wouldn't be enough as they'd fly out for the final out falling 8-5 to Fairfield to snap their 11 game winning streak. The Bombers would finish the game with five errors and seven hits given up.
The Bombers will look to clean up those mistakes as they travel to Lebanon to take on the Warriors tonight at 5:30 the game will be streamed on ESPX.
