The Bombers headed into this weekend on a scorching hot nine game winning streak including a dominant 6-0 shutout of Harrison led by McGeady and Vovak to throw the shutout. McGeady and Vovak combined for ten strikeouts, four hits, and three walks. Seniors
Jack Ryan and
Dillon Brus led the way offensively combining for four hits, three RBIs, and two walks. This weekend the team looked to keep their scorching hot momentum facing hard-hitting offenses Edgewood and Northmont.
On Friday the Bombers scraped and clawed to a 2-1 victory over the Thunderbolts in a back and forth pitching duel. Taking the hill for the Bombers was junior
Eric Nienaber. Nienaber opened with a smooth inning of work after a leadoff single, he sat down the next three batters on a punchout, fly out, and ground out. On the hill for the Thunderbolts was hard-throwing senior Brady Whittaker sat down the Bombers 1-2-3 with two grounds out and three pitch strikeout.
Nienaber swung the momentum to the Bombers in the second inning with a quick pinpoint inning of work striking out the side including two batters looking. Opening the bottom half of the inning, senior
Jackson Sherrard drew a leadoff walk to create a scoring opportunity for the Bombers. The Bombers would bring in sophomore
Griffin Lyons to run for Sherrard. That move would benefit the Bombers as after a wild pitch, junior Logan Von Hoelle would smash a screaming line drive to left to plate the first run of the game. Following a fielder's choice, sophomore
Griffin Doxsey would help tack on another run with a double to left. Junior
Cullen O'Brien followed with a bunt single to leave the Bombers threatening on the corners with one out. However, Whittaker would stop the bleeding with a strikeout and fly out to end the inning with the Bombers leading 2-0.
Both sides would fight open up momentum swinging opportunities but to no avail until the top of the sixth. Opening the top of the sixth, Nienaber allowed a leadoff single before settling down with back-to-back outs. However, the Thunderbolts wouldn't go down without a fight as they'd cut the deficit in half on a hard hit single up the middle. Nienaber continued to struggle loading the bases on a single and hit by pitch before being pulled for standout sophomore closer
Sam Vovak. Vovak would get the last out of the inning on a fly out to center. Vovak would finish the game with a clean nineth with a strikeout, sac bunt, and pop out giving the Bombers their 10th straight win.
Nienaber added his seventh win of the season tied for most in the GCL on 5.2 innings of work giving up five hits, one walk, one run, and striking out nine. As for the offense O'Brien helped create opportunities for the Bombers going 2-2. This game would motivate them to dominate as they faced a hard-hitting Edgewood the next day.
On Saturday the Bombers traveled to Great American Ballpark to face Edgewood's explosive offense. Ryan took the bump for the Bombers in this one, where the defense struggled early. After an opening punchout in the first, The Bombers would commit two errors to give Edgewood a 1-0 lead on a fly ball to center and ground ball to third. After both sides went down in order, the Bombers would rally back to take the lead, as they'd load the bases on two singles and a walk before Doxsey would drive two home on a single to left to give the Bombers a 2-1 lead headed into the third.
After another dominant inning of work in the third from Ryan, senior
Braden Bricking would draw a lead off walk before an error by the pitcher would advance Bricking to third with one out allowing Sherrard drive him home on a sac fly to give the Bombers a 3-1 lead to end the third. Ryan would continue to silence the Cougars as he'd strike out six of the next nine batters he'd face. Headed into the bottom of the sixth, after a one out walk to sophomore
Dominick Dials, Doxsey would smash his first homer of the season to give the Bombers a 5-1 lead.
The Cougars wouldn't go away as they'd load the bases with one out before cutting the deficit to 5-2 on a fielder's choice which would end the day for Ryan in favor of Vovak where he'd strikeout the final batter for his second straight save. Ryan dominated the Cougars going 6.1 innings with 12 strikeouts, one free pass, two runs, and one hit. Doxsey continued his momentum from last game going 2-3 with one run, four RBIs, and a HR to cap off an electric weekend batting .500 with five RBIs and a home run.
The Bombers will look to extend their winning streak to 12 as they host Fairfield on Senior night at 5 p.m.
