In a dominant performance on the road, St. Xavier cruised to a 55-43 victory over La Salle, furthering solidifying their top position in the Greater Catholic League - South. The victory, which moved their record to 15-3, was highlighted by a balanced offensive attack and a smothering defense that kept La Salle at bay throughout the game.
The first quarter set the tone, with St. Xavier taking an early 15-11 lead behind strong shooting from senior Jacob Wassler, who was an offensive force all night. Wassler finished with 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting, including 2-of-4 from beyond the arc, showcasing his ability to score in a variety of ways. The Bombers' defense, led by a swarming perimeter and aggressive rebounding, helped limit La Salle's chances, especially in the paint where St. Xavier outscored the Lancers, 24-16.
The second quarter was a showcase of St. Xavier's depth and composure. Donovan Waleskowski, who finished with 19 points, caught fire early and helped extend the lead to 27-19 at halftime. Waleskowski was lights out from deep, knocking down five of his nine three-point attempts, adding another layer to St. Xavier's offensive efficiency.
La Salle fought back in the third quarter, but the Bombers were unshaken. Despite La Salle's efforts, which included a solid 9-of-15 performance from the free-throw line in the second half, St. Xavier's defense remained resolute. They forced tough shots and limited fast-break opportunities, all while maintaining their offensive rhythm. St. Xavier pushed the lead to 42-30 by the start of the fourth, never allowing La Salle to close the gap.
In the final frame, St. Xavier maintained their composure, sticking to their game plan and executing efficiently. The Bombers sealed the win with strong free-throw shooting, hitting 4-of-6 in the fourth quarter to close out the 55-43 victory.
While the offense was clicking, it was St. Xavier's defense that truly stood out. The Bombers limited La Salle to just 43 points, with the Lancers shooting only 43.3% from the field and a dismal 0-for-4 from beyond the arc in the second half. St. Xavier's ability to shut down La Salle's key players, including holding the Lancers' leading scorer, Drae Arnold, to just 15 points, proved to be the difference.
With this win, the Bombers carry strong momentum into their final home game of the season against Moeller this Friday. The Bombers are 4-0 in GCL South play, while the Moeller Crusaders are 2-2.Â
