St. Xavier remains undefeated in the GCL South (3-0) with a commanding 46-30 victory over rival Elder on Friday night, in front of a sellout crowd at Berning Gym. The Bombers (14-3) pulled away in the second half, turning a tight contest into a comfortable win with stellar defense and timely scoring.
Despite a competitive start, St. Xavier found its rhythm in the second half, limiting Elder (10-3) to just 10Â points in the final two quarters. The Bombers' defense was suffocating, especially in the third quarter when they held Elder to a goose egg, forcing missed shot after missed shot.
The victory was powered by a balanced offensive effort. Senior guard Donovan Waleskowski led the way with 11 points, including two crucial 3-pointers that helped the Bombers build momentum in the second and third quarters. Jacob Wassler added 9 points and 4Â rebounds, while Brayden Reilly chipped in 7 points and a game-high 6 rebounds.
The Bombers' bench also played a crucial role, contributing 10 points, with Jack Ryan adding 4 points off the bench, and Connor Bareswilt hitting a timely 3-pointer. The depth and unselfish play from St. Xavier were evident, as they out-rebounded Elder 27-19 and created multiple second-chance opportunities.
Elder, on the other hand, struggled to get into an offensive flow. They shot just 32.3% from the field, including an ice-cold 0-5 performance in the third quarter. Cam Williams, Elder's leading scorer, finished with 11 points, but it wasn't enough to spark his team as they could not recover from their shooting slump.
The game was never in doubt after the third quarter when St. Xavier stretched its lead to 16 points, their largest of the night. Elder fought hard, but the Bombers' defense and ability to control the tempo were too much to overcome.
The atmosphere at Berning Gym was electric, with the sold-out crowd backing their Bombers every step of the way. The fans were on their feet as St. Xavier made its push in the fourth quarter, sealing the victory and maintaining its perfect record in the GCL.
With the win, St. Xavier solidifies its place at the top of the league and looks ahead to yet another GCL battle at La Salle High School this Friday night.Â
