Football Holds Off Elder in Exciting GCL Victory
This past Friday night, St. Xavier High School edged out Cincinnati Elder with a nail-biting 22-17 victory, showcasing intense competition and standout performances from both teams.
First Half Action
The game kicked off with St. Xavier receiving the ball first, quickly advancing down the field. Junior Daniel Vollmer made a significant impact early on, contributing key yardage on multiple plays. The first quarter ended with both teams exchanging possessions, but St. Xavier broke the deadlock with a powerful 2-yard touchdown rush from Vollmer in the second quarter, putting them up 7-0.
Elder responded with determination, as quarterback Kaden Estep led a methodical drive, that resulted in a 19-yard field goal just before halftime, narrowing St. Xavier's lead to 10-7. The teams headed into the locker room tightly contested, setting the stage for an exhilarating second half.
Second Half Highlights
After halftime, St. Xavier struck quickly again, with quarterback Chase Herbstreit scoring on a 2-yard touchdown run, extending the lead to 14-10. A critical interception by Elder's Corey Selle turned the momentum, leading to a defensive touchdown as Joey Ditullio returned a pick 74 yards for six points, flipping the score in favor of Elder at 17-16.
With the clock winding down and tensions high, St. Xavier needed a response. The offense rallied, and Herbstreit connected on a stunning 58-yard touchdown pass to Vollmer, reclaiming the lead at 22-17 with under a minute remaining.
Final Moments
In a dramatic finish, Elder mounted one last drive, but time ran out as Estep's final pass attempts fell short. The St. Xavier defense held strong, securing the GCL win at "The Pit."Â
