Basketball Tops Mason To Move to 3-0
In a commanding performance on Tuesday, St. Xavier cruised to a 64-29 victory over Mason High School, showcasing a blend of sharp shooting, relentless defense, and impressive teamwork.
From the tip-off, it was clear that St. Xavier had control. The Bombers' offense was firing on all cylinders, led by the red-hot Donovan Waleskowski, who torched the net for 23 points on a scorching 7-10 shooting performance, including a stellar 5-8 from three-point range. Waleskowski's long-range shooting helped open up the floor, allowing his teammates to contribute in various ways.
Luke Sorce was a key contributor off the bench, adding 13 points, including three three-pointers, while Jacob Wassler dominated the boards with 11 rebounds to go along with 9 points. The team shot an impressive 56.1% from the field and was lethal from beyond the arc, hitting 9-24 three-pointers (37.5%). Even when they didn't hit from deep, St. Xavier stayed aggressive, converting 9 of 14 free throws (64.3%) to keep their offense clicking.
The St. Xavier defense was just as overwhelming, limiting Mason to just 29 points on 11-34 shooting. The Bombers' pressure was relentless, with Brendan Deeley and Charlie Gruber providing stifling defense, while the rest of the team was active on the boards and in passing lanes. St. Xavier's physicality inside was evident, as they racked up 31 rebounds to Mason's 14, with Wassler and John Veith especially active in the paint.
Despite Mason's best efforts, the Bombers' all-around excellence was too much to overcome. From their efficient offense to their consistent defense, St. Xavier proved they were the dominant force in this matchup, leading from start to finish. With their strong showing, the Bombers improved to 3-0.Â
Freshman showcased impressive efforts as well with a 53-20 win over the Comets. JV also added to the program sweep as they beat Mason 60-51.Â
