Football Secures Victory Over St. Ignatius in 2nd Annual Paul Lammermeier Cup

Football Secures Victory Over St. Ignatius in 2nd Annual Paul Lammermeier CupĀ
Ā
The 2nd Annual Paul Lammermeier Cup was hosted this year by the St. Xavier Bombers at RDI Stadium & Ballaban Field. At their annual meeting, the two schools continue to live out their rich Jesuit traditions and love for the game of football. At this cup, fans, players, and staff greatly honor Paul Lammermeier, a devoted individual to both institutions for several decades of his life.Ā

The game kicked off with Saint Ignatius receiving the ball but struggled early, going three-and-out after failing to convert a key third down. St. Xavier took over and made quick work of the field, with Chase Herbstreit connecting on key passes and Daniel Vollmer running effectively. They capped off their drive with a touchdown pass from Herbstreit to Vollmer, putting St. Xavier on the board first (with a good extra point), 7-0.

Saint Ignatius continued to face challenges on offense, unable to find rhythm as they turned the ball over on downs. St. Xavier capitalized on the momentum, attempting to extend their lead. An interception by Tristin Hughes gave Saint Ignatius a glimmer of hope, but their drive faltered again, resulting in a blocked punt.

As the half progressed, St. Xavier added to their lead with a successful field goal by Owen Davidson, making it 10-0. Saint Ignatius fought back, executing a couple of good plays, but they couldn't find the end zone. St. Xavier, on the other hand, increased their lead to 17-0 with another touchdown before halftime.

With the first half wrapping up, Saint Ignatius managed a few more passing plays that eventually resulted in a rushing touchdown bringing the score 17-7 at intermission.Ā

Opening the 2nd half, St. Xavier continuedĀ their offensive prowess. Chase Herbstreit connected on several key passes, and Daniel Vollmer continued to be a force on the ground. They drove down the field and regained control with another touchdown, extending their lead to 24-7.

Saint Ignatius wasn't ready to back down, however. They mounted another strong drive, with their quarterback making precise throws and their running back finding some openings. This time, they scored again, narrowing the gap to 24-13 (blocked extra point)Ā and reigniting their hopes.

As the clock wound down, St. Xavier found themselves in a position to ice the game. They took control of the ball, running down the clock and adding to their total courtesy of a 9-yard rushing touchdown from Vollmer.Ā

The score sat at 31-13 with just minutes left. Ignatius fought valiantly to respond, and they were able to put up another passing touchdown (with a missed 2-point conversion), resulting in a final score of 31-19.

The Bombers have one final regular-season matchup this Friday, October 25th. They host Life Christian Academy (VA) at RDI Stadium & Ballaban Field with a 7:00 kickoff. We will recognize our senior players'Ā and their families' commitment and efforts towards the St. Xavier Football program. Senior festivites / recognition will take place on the field promptly at 6:20pm prior to kickoff. Tickets can be purchased here:Ā https://stxsports.net/sports/2020/2/25/tickets.aspx
