Football Shuts Out La Salle In Annual "King of the Road" Battle
Â
In this year's annual "King of the (North Bend) Road" game, it was La Salle's turn to host. With just a few miles that separate the two teams, excited fans from both schools filled the stadium with bright pink colors in support of Breast Cancer Awareness month. The St. Xavier Bombers were able to successfully shut out the Lancers with a final score of 9-0.Â
The first half began with St. Xavier kicking off to LaSalle, who struggled to gain traction, resulting in a quick three-and-out. The Bombers took over but faced their own challenges, culminating in a punt after a few short gains.
LaSalle's next possession showed promise as their quarterback executed a few key plays, including a rush for 14 yards and another pass for a significant gain. However, their drive stalled at St. Xavier's 33-yard line, leading to another turnover on downs.
St. Xavier capitalized on this opportunity, putting together a methodical drive that culminated in a field goal from Owen Davidson, giving them a 3-0 lead at the start of the second quarter. LaSalle responded with renewed vigor, but their offense continued to struggle against a formidable St. Xavier defense.
As the game progressed, St. Xavier maintained their slight edge, executing short but effective plays while LaSalle found it increasingly difficult to sustain drives.Â
In the third quarter, St. Xavier continued to control the tempo, punting effectively while limiting LaSalle's offensive output.Â
The fourth quarter saw St. Xavier finally break through with a touchdown after an impressive 90-yard drive that featured a pivotal 31-yard touchdown pass to junior Cameron Taylor.Â
Overall, St. Xavier's defense proved to be the difference-maker, successfully neutralizing LaSalle's offensive threats while their offense executed just enough to secure the GCL win.
Moving into week 9, the Bombers stand at a 5-3 record (2-1 in the GCL Conference). They host Cleveland St. Ignatius for the 2nd Annual Paul Lammermeier Memorial Cup this Friday at RDI Stadium at 6:00pm.Â
