SPRINGFIELD TWP., Ohio – When a classic game between archrivals Elder and St. Xavier came down to the final play, Elder head coach Doug Ramsey had to decide whether to trust his junior quarterback or his defense.
After St. Xavier scored a touchdown and kicked an extra point in its possession to start overtime, the Bombers led 31-24.
Elder answered with a 9-yard touchdown run by junior QB Ryan Brass. Elder didn't hesitate to keep the offense on the field and go for two points and the win.
Brass rushed up the middle and dove across the goal line with plenty of room to spare, giving his Panthers a 32-31 win over the Bombers at St. Xavier's RDI Stadium.
"We wanted to win it there," Brass said. "We knew we had it in us. We knew our line was better than their d-line. We just wanted to run it right up their throat."
St. Xavier had been on an offensive roll at the time and rushed for nearly 300 yards in the game.
We weren't going to stop them," Ramsey said. "We were to the point where we had corners playing linebacker. We were just running out of guys. They ran the ball down our throats all night. We weren't going to stop them. I'm not a big go-for-two guy, but I think in certain situations like that, we had to."
