Basketball Holds on for Road Win at Mason

A back and forth contest Tuesday night saw the Bombers hold on for a crucial two-point road win against the Comets of Mason High School, winning 55-53.

The two squads took turns throwing punches early in the game, but a second quarter flurry of threes for Mason saw them push their lead to as many as 10-points. Mason hit eight triples in total for the half, but the Bombers were able to claw their way back to a two-point deficit at intermission, trailing 28-26.

The Bombers came out of halftime ready to compete as they stormed back to take their biggest lead of the game in the third at six points and went into the fourth quarter looking to protect a 41-38 lead.

In the games final quarter, the Bombers fought hard to protect their lead until Mason was able to tie the contest at 53-53 with just 44 second remaining. After running the clock down, the Bombers were able to find Jacob Wassler at the elbow and he was able to drive in for two of his team high 14-points to take a 55-53 lead. The Bomber defense held strong, not allowing Mason a clear look at the game winning three as they won their first true road game of the year.

Wassler led the Bombers in scoring as he tallied a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds while adding in 3 big blocks. Brayden Reilly was the other Bomber in double figures as he stuffed the stat sheet to the tune of 13 points, 4 rebounds,4 assists, 3 steals, and a block. Gordy Sulfsted was on the precipice of a double-double, scoring 9 points and adding 7 rebounds.

The Bombers controlled the game from the inside out, winning the rebounding battle 32-26 and collecting 7 blocks on the evening, but it was from beyond the arc that allowed Mason to stay in the game. The Comets knocked down 11 threes on the evening, led by Matt DeBrosse's 6-8 mark from three, on his way to a game-high 18-point outing.

The Bombers sit at 2-0 on the young season as they travel across the Ohio River for their next two matchups against a pair of Kentucky powerhouses. They are at Newport High School on Saturday as they take on Cooper High School
(KY) in the John Turner Classic at 5:15 pm. They then travel back to the Bluegrass State on Tuesday when they visit Covington Catholic for a program triple header. Their first home game will be Saturday, December 16th in a varsity only matchup against Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy.
