Football Downs La Salle, Remains 'Kings of the Road'

St. Xavier welcomed La Salle to campus on Friday night for a GCL matchup, but to also renew the annual King of the Road rivalry contest.

La Salle jumped out to an early 10-0 lead, leaving a shocked Bomber home crowd for much of the first half. Sophomore Jake Britt got the Bombers on the board with a tough 14-yard touchdown run in the waning seconds of the first half and after a Jake Cengia extra point, the Bombers went into halftime down 10-7.

Jake Britt found pay dirt once again to open the second half, this time giving the Bombers the lead at 14-10. Later, Jack McClatchey hauled in a pass from Chase Herbstreit with 1:09 remaining in the third quarter to extend the lead to 21-10.

La Salle promptly marched down the field and got on the board early in the fourth quarter with a 30-yard field goal making the game a one-possession contest.

Driving to close out the game, the Bombers missed a 39-yard attempt with 5:38 remaining in the fourth quarter - leaving the door open for the Lancers to make a push.

La Salle drove down all the way to the Bomber 17 yard line, looking to push the contest into overtime. Sophomore Brayden Reilly had other ideas, though, as he made a break on a La Salle pass and corralled an interception to stifle the Lancer drive.

Two plays later, a Daniel Vollmer 47 yard rush paired with a La Salle unsportsmanlike conduct penalty set the Bombers up for another game closing field goal. This time Cengia knocked an 18-yard field goal through the uprights to all but solidify the 24-13 victory.

Separated by a mere five miles, the rivalry between the two schools dates back to a 40-8 Bomber victory in 1962. St. Xavier leads the series currently at 47-17-1 and Coach Specht is now 18-4 all-time against La Salle. The Bombers are on a current 4-game win streak over the Lancers, dating back to the 2020 season.

The Bombers sit at 4-4 on the season and 1-2 in GCL play. After three consecutive weeks at home, they'll hit the road for their annual rivalry game with St. Ignatius. The program will play a JV-V doubleheader at Byers Field in Parma, Ohio. JV will kick off at 12:00 pm with Varsity to follow at 3:00 pm. Tickets to the varsity game can be purchased here.
