Bombers Outlast St. Ignatius in Overtime, Win Inaugural Paul Lammermeier Memorial Game

Bombers Outlast St. Ignatius in Overtime, Win Inaugural Paul Lammermeier Memorial Cup

St. Xavier and St. Ignatius have been meeting annually for years, celebrating their shared Jesuit tradition by competing on the football field. This year and every year moving forward, the game will have additional meaning that's significant to both the Bombers and the Wildcats of St. Ignatius.

The two schools agreed to rename the contest the Paul Lammermeier Memorial Cup in honor of Paul Lammermeier, a St. Ignatius alumni who also did a great deal of work to establish a Community Service Program at St. Xavier High School as an employee.

It took free football to decide a winner, but the Bombers prevailed in the inaugural Paul Lammermeier Memorial Cup, beating St. Ignatius 21-14 in overtime.

Offense was at a premium on a cold, rainy Saturday afternoon at Byers Field in Parma, Ohio. Outside of a St. Ignatius touchdown early in the first quarter, both teams struggled to move the ball down the field given the conditions. The Bombers missed a field goal in the first quarter, but was unable to get much going offensively otherwise. A Lucas Bishop interception on the last play of the first half almost ended in a Bomber touchdown, but Bishop's attempt fell short around mid-field.

St. Ignatius opened the second half with possession, scoring a 71-yard touchdown on the first play of the second half to give them a commanding 14-0 lead. The Bombers responded swiftly as Daniel Vollmer took a quarterback keeper 79-yards for a touchdown on their second play of the drive.

The game stayed at 14-7 until early in the 4th quarter. The Bombers found themselves with a 4th and 11 right at midfield. Lining up in punt formation, AJ Golden handled the snap and threw a pop pass to defensive lineman Ted Hammond who rumbled his way 49-yards for a St. Xavier touchdown.

An Andrew Weber interception set the Bombers up with good field position late in the fourth quarter, but they were unable to capitalize. Neither team was able to contend for points for the remainder of the 4th, sending the game into overtime at 14-14.

St. Xavier got first possession, using three straight Steven Napier runs up the middle to score the first touchdown. The Bomber defense was able to stifle St. Ignatius' opening possession, forcing quarterback Joshua Papesh to overthrow his receiver on a 4th and Goal from their own 20-yard line, securing a 21-14 overtime win in the process.

The win improves the Bomber record to 5-4 on the year as they close out their regular season on Friday, October 20th at home for Senior Night. The Bombers will host Trinity Catholic from Ocala, Florida at 7:00 pm at RDI Stadium. Tickets are available here!
