Bomber Football Leaves Chicago with Great Experience, Despite Loss

The St. Xavier High School football program brought all three levels up to the Windy City last weekend, playing Loyola Academy in football at the Freshman, JV, and Varsity levels.

After the Freshmen and JV programs split, with the Bombers winning the Freshmen contest 33-14, the tiebreaker for the weekend came down to the Sunday afternoon matchup between the two Varsity teams on ESPN.

Loyola raced out to an early two touchdown lead and after a Robert Houston pick-six to bring the Bombers within a touchdown at 14-7, they were never able to pull any closer. Loyola was able to rifle off 34 first-half points, including several big plays that the Bomber offense couldn't match.

St. Xavier continued to fight into the fourth quarter, scoring two touchdowns late in the contest to bring the score to it's conclusion at 44-20. The game's final score, a 10-yard touchdown pass from Jack O'Malley to Eli Griesser wound up as the #2 play on ESPN's Top 10 Plays of the Day. You can find that highlight here.

The weekend wasn't full of just football, however. The two teams and their families came together Saturday night in true Jesuit tradition, to celebrate a mass and share a meal afterwards. The community of the event proved to be a highlight of the weekend!

The loss moves the Bombers to 0-2 on the year, albeit the losses came against two of the top programs in the Midwest. They will look to bounce back with their home opener this Friday, September 2nd at 7:00 pm against Olentangy Liberty. Don't wait, act fast and get your tickets here!
