Bomber Football Takes Home Opener in Convincing Fashion

After spending the first two weeks of the regular season on the road, St. Xavier Football was back at the friendly confines of RDI Stadium for the first of a three-game homestand as they hosted Olentangy Liberty on Friday night.

The Bombers jumped out to a 14-0 lead thanks to touchdown passes of 40 and 49-yards from Jack O'Malley to Jack McClatchey and Kyle Fitzgerald in the first quarter. The Bombers got another 40-yard bomb from O'Malley, this time to Jamaal Sharp in the 2nd quarter to take a 21-7 lead.

A Jake Cengia field goal as time expired gave the Bombers a 24-14 lead into half time.

Liberty struck first in the third quarter, pulling within three at 24-21, but it was all St. Xavier from there on out. O'Malley ran one in from two-yards out to go up 31-21 in the third and he found Sharp for another touchdown in the fourth quarter to give the Bombers a comfortable 38-21 lead with 4:07 to play.

Bomber senior defensive back Nolan Myers returned an interception with 28 second remaining to bring the game to it's final score of 45-21.

O'Malley paced the Bomber offense to the tune of 329 yards through the air to pair with his four touchdown passes. He added another one on the ground for a total of five touchdowns on the evening. The O'Malley to Sharp connection continues to be strong as the senior wideout finished with eight receptions for 120 yards and two touchdowns. Junior running back Steven Napier finished with 114 yards on the ground off of 31 carries.

Defensively, it was Alex Devine (11 tackles) and Gus Folke (10 tackles) who paced the Bombers as they outscored Liberty 21-7 in the second half. Along with Myer's pick-six, Lucas Bishop also tallied an interception on the evening to pair with his six tackles.

The win moves St. Xavier to 1-2 on the season with a chance to even out their record next weekend at home. They welcome Mishawaka Penn High School out of Indiana to RDI Stadium on Friday, September 9th at 7:00 pm. Gates will open at 6:00 pm and tickets are on sale here.
