2022 St. Xavier Athletic Hall of Fame

The 2022 St. Xavier Athletic Hall of Fame Dinner & Induction was held on February 10 at St. Xavier High School. St. Xavier alum and ESPN analyst Rocky Boiman '98 emceed the event attended by over 800 people with ESPN analyst and former Ohio State Buckeye Quarterback Kirk Herbstreit as the guest speaker. This years inductees included (L to R in above picture) Jim Muething '81, Matt James '10, Luke Massa '10, Ray Watkins '68, Kyle Ransom '03 and Robert Janning '39.

Robert Janning '39 - Baseball, Basketball, Football
Robert was a true stand-out in the class of 1939 as he led the football and basketball teams to some amazing wins and added Baseball to his repertoire his Senior year. As a Senior, Robert served as co-captain of the 1938 football team known as the Conquerors before the school changed the name to the Bombers several decades later. In football not only did Robert play quarter back and running back, but he was also the team punter. He led the Conquerors to a number of large victories during his 4 year at St. X and was the top and most outstanding athlete in the class of 1939.  Robert received this recognition posthumously and his son Robert Janning '67 received it on his behalf.

Matt James '10 - Football
Matt played both football and basketball all four years at St. X. In football, Matt was twice 1st Team GCL, was named lineman of the year in 2009, and 1st Team All-State in 2009. In addition, he was also a USA Today 1st team All-American and participated in the U.S. Army All-American game in 2010. Matt served as captain of the football team and accepted a football scholarship to play at the University of Notre Dame.  Matt receives this recognition posthumously. Matt's father Jerry James from the class of 1979 accepted the award on behalf of his son. 
 
Luke Massa '10 - Basketball & Football
Luke dominated in both football and basketball . In football Luke was unanimously voted captain for two years as he was a leader on and off the field. He was part of the 2007 state championship team and was named 1st team All-GCL and All-City his Senior year. In basketball Luke was Captain for two years as well and was named 1st team All-GCL his Junior and Senior year and All-City his Senior year. He helped lead the Bombers to the 2010 District Championship and led the team that year in scoring, rebounding, blocks and steals. He still holds multiple records in both football and basketball at St. X. Luke accepted a scholarship to play football at the University of Notre Dame. While there, he lettered for four years and is a member of the Monogram Club.
 
Jim Muething '81 - Golf
Jim was a 4-year varsity member of the St. Xavier golf team and was the MVP on the 1980 St. Xavier golf team that won every dual match and captured first place in the GCL and placed third in the State Tournament.  He was chosen as the GCL Player of the Year, First Team GCL and was Co-Medalist at the District Tournament. Jim is the only person in Cincinnati golf history to have won the Junior Met, the Men's Met and the Senior Met.  Along the way, he also won the 1982 Ohio Junior Amateur Tournament and the 1984 Ohio Men's Amateur Tournament. Jim also qualified and played in the U.S. Amateur tournament in Oklahoma. Jim went on to play golf at Miami University where he earned three varsity letters and was the Individual MAC Champion in 1984 and was First Team All-MAC in 1984 and 1985.  In 1985, Jim became Miami's first NCAA Academic All-American, earned Miami's Scholar Athlete of the Year award and in 2019 he was inducted into Miami's Hall of Fame. After college, Jim played the mini tours for several years and qualified and played in two PGA tour events. He played golf with Presidents, Cabinet Members, Senators, Congressman, celebrities and athletes.  His last stop as a head golf professional was at Merion Golf Club in Philadelphia, PA which is rated as one of the top ten golf courses in the world and has hosted 5 US Open Championships. In 2016, Jim was honored by the Legends of Cincinnati Golf organization as one of its honorees.  Today, Jim is working to introduce kids to golf and teach important life skills, core values and healthy habits as a member of the Board of Trustees of the First Tee of Greater Cincinnati & Northern Kentucky. 

Kyle Ransom '03 - Swimming
During his career at St. X, Kyle won seven Ohio state titles - six of them as part of a relay team. The team won four straight state championships, three National Championships in 2001, 2002, and 2003, and the 2001 Swimming World Title. Named a high school All-American 13 times during his career, Kyle finished his senior season with a state championship in the 200-yard individual medley and anchored both the state championship 200-yard freestyle relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay teams. In addition, he held three St. Xavier team records and was named Swimmer of the Year in 2003 by the Cincinnati Enquirer. He still remains in St. X's top 50 all-time performances in 9 of 11 events. Kyle continued his career at Stanford, where he was a three-time collegiate All-American. His team won the Pac-10 conference four times and he was a 2-time Pac-10 conference champion in 2006 and 2007. Kyle won a bronze medal for Team USA as a member of the 400-yard free relay team at the World University Games in 2005 and was an Olympic Trials Qualifier in 2004, 2008, and 2012. Kyle is one of many reasons the AquaBombers continue their legacy in Ohio and beyond. 
 
Ray Watkins '68 - Football & Track
Ray has the esteemed designation as the first African American athlete at St. Xavier to earn All-City honors which he earned his Senior year in both football and track. In addition, he was named All-GCL in both sports and won the 100 and 220 yard dash both his Junior and Senior years. In football Ray was the MVP his Senior year, co-captain of the All-GCL team, All-Southwest Ohio Football Coaches Association and was the leading rusher, receiver and scorer his Senior year. Ray received a scholarship to play football at the University of Dayton where he lettered two years to go along with his 2 varsity letters for football at St. X and 3 varsity letters in track.
