Kellom Carries Bombers to Victory Over Moeller, 49-16

Football Extends Win Streak to 13

CLIFTON – Charles Kellom scored on touchdown runs of two, six, and six yards, but it was his 56-yard catch and run that broke the game open in St. Xavier's 49-16 runaway win over Moeller.

"If we can run the ball like that the rest of the year, I think our offense has a chance to be different," St. Xavier coach Steve Specht said. "We were able to run it tonight, some nights we're going to have to throw it. It's nice to be able to see us do both."

In the first high school football contest at historic Nippert Stadium in two years, the night belonged to Charles Kellom who toted the ball 37 times for 210 rushing yards and three touchdowns.  Kellom entered the game with 206 yards through limited action in the first four games.  The senior co-captain more than doubled his season output and took the top spot in the GCL in both rushing yards (416) and touchdowns (11).

Playing a full four quarters for the first time since Week One against Lakota West, Brogan McCaughey was 14-for-21 passing for 210 yards and four touchdowns. Terrell McFarlin was on the receiving end of two, with Kellom and Jay Farrar also pulling in touchdowns.

"Every week we try to be the best version of ourselves," McCaughey said. "I think you saw that out here. We played good but we've got a lot more in the tank."
Kellom became St. Xavier's first 200-yard rusher since Ben Glines ran for 251 in 2013 against Indianapolis Cathedral.  His four touchdowns were the most by a St. X player since Jalen Patterson's performance in the 2020 state championship game.

The Bombers continued their recent trend by forcing the game in to the running clock scenario following Kellom's fourth touchdown with 6:01 left.  That marks the fourth time in five games thus far in the 2021 season.

St. Xavier outrushed Moeller 253-95.  St. X converted 12-of-16 third down attempts and limited Moeller to a mere 1-of-8 on third down.

In its first foray in the GCL gauntlet, St. Xavier jumped out to an early lead courtesy of an eight-yard pass in the corner of the end zone from McCaughey to Jay Farrar.

The Bombers defense harassed Moeller quarterback Van George for much of the first half. After allowing a Moeller touchdown, St. Xavier needed two plays to respond with a score of its own when McFarlin scooted 50 yards in front of the St. X sideline for a score.

Under duress from Marque' Cummings and Ted Hammond, Grant Lyons made a diving catch of a George pass.  It marked the third interception of the season for Lyons.

Four seconds later, Kellom's dive from the two made it a 14-0 advantage.

Led by Cummings' two sacks, the Bombers finished with four quarterback sacks.  Lyons led the Long Blue Line with six tackles, a sack and interception.

The Bombers intercepted three passes, but lost a fumble for a 3-to-1 turnover advantage.  On the season, they are +7 in turnover margin.
St. Xavier returns to RDI Stadium at Ballaban Field next week  to host Elder.  Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
