Game Recap: Football |

St. Xavier Looks Brilliant in 42-7 Win Over Colerain

Bombers punt rush catches lightning in a bottle

After an 80-minute delay due to lightning, Max Bonner blocked a punt on the first possession of the game and Alex Kemper recovered a fumble on a punt later in the first quarter to give St. Xavier the momentum on its way to a 42-7 win at Colerain.

"The punt can change the complexion of a game faster than any other play in football," said head coach Steve Specht.  "You block a punt and it can really deflate the opposition.  Blocking a punt and scoring right away was a big lift.  Especially, after the lightning delays.  Then we did it, again.  Our special teams played very well."

One play after the blocked punt, Charles Kellom opened with scoring with a three-yard plunge over left tackle 94 seconds into the contest.
Later in the first quarter, Terrell McFarlin caught a 10-yard strike from Brogan McCaughey to give St. Xavier a 14-0 lead.  McFarlin finished with a game-high 109 yards on four receptions, including a 65-yard catch and run that setup the score.

McCaughey completed 12-of-14 first-half passes, including three for touchdowns.  The senior signalcaller connected with seven different receivers for 222 yards through the air in the first half.

"I thought our kids really handled the delay well," Specht added.  "It's hard to come out and play a game when you wait and wait.  What you saw in the first half was a veteran team on our sideline."

In a week in which teams dealt with heat concerns, the lightning provided only a 30-minute pre-game warmup for the Bombers.

Bonner keyed the defense with six tackles in the first half.  Marque Cummings notched five stops, including two quarterback sacks.  Kemper stepped up to tally two tackles for loss to go with his fumble recovery and a pass deflection.

The Bombers defense held the Cardinals to -9 yard rushing and 15 yards of total offense in the first half.

On the ensuing Cardinals' possession, Kemper's recovery in the end zone made it a 21-0 advantage with 2:41 to play in the first quarter.

McCaughey found Luke Vrsansky open for a nine-yard score in the second quarter to make it 28-0.  It was one of two catches for Vrsansky in the game.

Kellom punched in his second score of the night one play after a 41-yard connection from McCaughey to Max Klare to make it 35-0.

On the final possession of the first half, St. Xavier choreographed a seven-play, 61-yard drive, capped by Joey Wassler's 12-yard touchdown catch that set the score at 42-0.

"You never expect to come in to Colerain Stadium and get a running clock in the second half," Specht commented.  "In all my years, this is a first.  I was pleased with what we did in the first half."

Playing with a running clock throughout the second half, St. Xavier went deep into its roster for players.  The Long Blue Line stopped two quarterback sneaks from the one yard line before yielding a touchdown with 8:41 to play to set the final margin, at 42-7.

"You make the most improvement from Week 1 to Week 2 of the season.  Let's face it, Lakota West may be the best defense we play against all year.  There were reasons our offense didn't play very well last week.  I thought they made good adjustments.  I was really pleased with not drawing as many penalty flags.  We cleaned some things up and that was impressive to me."

Klare booted his lone punt 52 yards.  Mathias Clark averaged 43.0 yards on two punts in his first career action.  Placekicker Mason Rohmiller split the uprights on all six point-after attempts.
St. Xavier returns to action on next Friday when it travels to Olentangy Liberty.  Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
