Kellom Posts Career Day to Lead St. Xavier Over Elder, 42-7

Bombers advance for rematch with Firebirds

CINCINNATI – Showing equal doses of power, finesse, and speed Charles Kellom scored four touchdowns and Terrell McFarlin added two of his own to lead St. Xavier to a runaway win over Elder, 42-7.

"I was very pleased with how our defense played tonight," said head coach Steve Specht. "The biggest question for us was how would we defend Elder's offense. They've done so much, so well. I thought tonight our kids played well defensively."

The Long Blue Line's defense was on full display, highlighted by St. X outrushing Elder 304-31 and outgaining Elder 553-222 in total offense.  The contest was out of reach in the third quarter and the disparity brought the running clock rule for the ninth time in 10 wins during the 2021 campaign.

Charles Kellom ran for a career-high 217 yards in three quarters of action. Kellom's four scores give him 29 touchdowns for the season, surpassing the mark of 28 set by Darius Ashley in 2005.
Brogan McCaughey completed 11-of-13 pass attempts for 249 yards and three touchdowns. McCaughey tossed a pair of two touchdowns to Kellom and one to Terrell McFarlin.

Max Klare led the Bombers with four catches for 108 yards. McFarlin totaled two catches for 62 yards.  Jay Farrar made two snags for 56.  Joey Wassler added a 20-yard reception.

St. Xavier's (10-2) defense kept focus on GCL South Athlete of the Year Drew Ramsey. Ramsey was restricted to three catches for 47 yards.

Max Bonner led the defense with seven tackles.  Eli Kirk and Grant Lyons registered six stops apiece.  Marque Cummings and Ted Hammond led the defensive front with one sack each.

After punts on the first possessions for each side, St. Xavier struck first on a swing pass to McFarlin, who went 28 yards to find the end zone.

After Elder (6-6) responded with a score of its own, the score was leveled, at 7-7.

Kellom capped St. Xavier's ensuing six-play, 80-yard drive with a catch of McCaughey's short two-yard pass.  Kellom was just getting warmed up as he would add a four-yard run on the next St. X possession.
Two plays after a Ramsey punt to the St. X one yard line, Kellom exploded off the left side for a career-long 97-yard touchdown with 1:39 before the half to make it 28-7.

In the third quarter, McFarlin went 32 yards with a reverse to extend the lead to 35-7.  Kellom tallied his fourtoh TD on a one-yard pass to set the final margin.

Facing Elder twice a year – regular season and playoffs – for each of the past three seasons, St. Xavier has won four straight.  Elder maintains the all-time series lead, at 53-46-6.

Dating back to the 2001 campaign, St. Xavier and Elder have met seven times in the playoffs.  St. Xavier improved to 4-0 against Elder in postseason games at RDI Stadium at Ballaban Field over the span.

In five of the first six playoff games, the winner went on to play in the OHSAA Division I final.  The Panthers won its first state crown in 2002. The Bombers advanced to the championship in 2001 and won titles in 2007 and 2020 after defeating the Panthers in earlier rounds each postseason run.
St. Xavier prepares for a rematch with Lakota West next Friday, Nov. 12. A familiar foe, St. X beat Lakota West 10-7 in the 2020 Division I, Region 4 final, 10-7.  The 2021 season began with St. X defeating Lakota West, 31-14.

The Division I, Region 4 semifinal round is set to be played at Princeton High School.  The action from Jake Sweeney Automotive Group Stadium kicks off at 7:00 p.m.
