Bombers Prove King of the Road, Repeat as GCL Champs with Win Over La Salle

McFarlin scores three TDs, Kellom adds four in 49-14 Win

Charles Kellom rushed for four scores and Terrell McFarlin registered three touchdown receptions of his own to lead St. Xavier to a 49-14 victory over La Salle and clinch the GCL South championship.  St. X totaled 524 yards of total offense and defensively, allowed La Salle a mere 86 yards in proving its dominance in the annual bragging rights for King of the North Bend Road.

"After last week, we challenged the kids," said head coach Steve Specht.  "We all got a little better. I thought the kids' focus in practice was much better. I'm awfully happy for our seniors.  Winning a GCL title during your senior year is something you never forget."

In a consistent theme throughout the season, St. Xavier received the opening kickoff and marched 73 yards in 1:25 before McFarlin caught an eight-yard pass to jump out to the early lead, at 7-0.

Two plays later, Grant Lyons recovered an errant lateral on the La Salle 19 and was on his way to an apparent touchdown before the play was stopped.  Taking advantage of the short field, Kellom's one-yard dive made it 14-0 just over four minutes into the contest.
Later in the quarter, Brogan McCaughey failed to connect with Kellom on a pass and it resulted in an 86-yard fumble return by La Salle to cut the lead to 14-7.

The combination of McCaughey and McFarlin connected on a quick-strike and McFarlin went 55 yards to give the Bombers a 21-7 lead.  McFarlin finished with a game-high seven catches for 188 yards.  The three touchdowns are a season-high.

Max Klare notched four receptions for 96 yards while Jay Farrar made one catch for seven yards.

After taking over at its own three yard line, Kellom's eight-yard run around the right side capped a 97- yard drive to make the score 28-7.  Kellom scored on runs of 1, 8, 8, and 8 yards for St. Xavier's first four-rushing touchdown night since Conor Hundley rushed for four scores in a 38-21 win over Pickerington Central during the 2011 season.  Kellom's four touchdowns give him 20 for the season.

"Terrell is having a tremendous year," said Specht. "We challenged him at the beginning of the year that he needed to lead the receivers.  Charles ran hard.  Charles plays as hard as anyone I've ever coached."

On their first play of the second half, McFarlin's 33-yard catch in the back of the end zone made the score 42-14.  Kellom's final tally started the running clock and set the final count at 49-14.

In the waning moments, Steven Napier carried the ball 13 times for 73 yards to run out the clock and secure the outcome.

"This was Goal No. 1," said Specht. "We wanted to win the GCL South. The GCL South – top to bottom – is as good as any league in the country. We will watch the film tomorrow.  We will enjoy this one."

With the focus on the Bombers' offense, Sam Buerkle led the defensive front with six tackles.  Lyons, Max Bonner and Sean Reilly tallied five stops apiece.
Next week, St. Xavier heads to Strongsville on Saturday, Oct. 15, to face St. Ignatius.  Kickoff for the Jesuit Cup is set for 4 p.m.
