Football Celebrates Seniors with Win Over Eagle's Landing, 44-14

St. Xavier caps regular season at 8-2 and sets its sights on the postseason

CINCINNATI –Charles Kellom and Brogan McCaughey combined to account for 410 yards of total offense and five touchdowns as St. Xavier capped its regular season with a 44-14 win over Eagle's Landing Christian Academy (Ga.).  St. X (8-2) saw its senior leadership to step up and lead it to an early  13-0 lead to bounce back from its second loss of the season.

"I thought we bounced back from a tough road loss last week," said head coach Steve Specht.  "I'm proud of our seniors.  It's important any time you win your final game at home.  I think now we will have at least two more opportunities to play at home in the playoffs.  We need to thank President Reilly for the fireworks display after the game.  That really added to the night's celebration."

Kellom totaled 253 yards of offense on his own with a game-high 131 rushing yards on 17 carries to go with his game-high eight catches for 122 yards and two scores.

"Charles had some really nice runs, both off of the run and pass game," said Specht.  "He kickstarted us when we needed it the most.  Coach Andrew Coverdale mixed up the play calls really well."

Mason Rohmiller to opened the scoring with field goals of 40 and 41 yards on St. Xavier's first two drives of the night.  The Long Blue Line leaned on its senior kicker for an early 6-0 advantage.

After Marque' Cummings forced a fumble and Sam Buerkle recovered the loose ball, the Bombers' offense took over on the Chargers' 31 yard line.

McCaughey needed seven seconds to drop back and connect with Terrell McFarlin for a 31-yard touchdown.  The first of four TD passes made it a 13-0 lead after the point-after by Rohmiller.

"I don't make assessments before watching the film, but Brogan did a nice job of creating for himself when pass protection broke down," said Specht.

Following ECLA's lone scoring drive of the night made it 13-7, McCaughey scrambled before finding Kellom 20 yards away for the first of his two receiving scores to make it 20-7.

On the ensuing St. X possession, an errant pass ruled a fumble was scooped by Eagle's Landing and taken 70 yards for a touchdown to cut the score to 20-14.

The controversial fumble return is only the second touchdown allowed by St. Xavier following a turnover this season.  The Long Blue Line has taken advantage of its opponents miscues and outscored them 102-14 in points off of turnover.

Two plays later, McCaughey and Kellom connected for a 67-yard catch and run to provide cushion and a 27-14 edge.

After a Chargers' punt, Kellom's 47-yard touchdown scamper midway through the second quarter extended the lead to 34-14.

Kellom's 23 touchdowns – 19 rushing, 4 receiving – are the most by a Bomber since Darius Ashley totaled 28 scores during the 2005 campaign.  At 977 rushing yards, Kellom is 23 away from becoming the Bombers' first 1,000 rusher since Ben Glines eclipsed the threshold over 13 games in 2014.

On ECLA's next play from scrimmage, Josh Anderson forced a fumble that was recovered by Ted Hammond after a two-yard gain.  On the next play, McCaughey found Max Klare open for a 24-yard touchdown pass to stretch the advantage to 41-14 at the 4:17 mark of the first half.

McCaughey completed 22-of-34 passes for 279 yards and connected with only four different receivers.  McFarlin totaled six catches for 65 yards.  Klare notched two catches for 37 yards, while Luke Vrsansky made two catches for 11 yards.

Perfect on five PAT kicks, Rohmiller's try from 53 yards at the end of regulation is his lone miss of the season.  It snapped a string of five consecutive made field goals.  Rohmiller owned a streak of 13 straight made tries, dating back to the 2020 campaign.

Busy with placements and kickoffs, Rohmiller's third and final field goal of the game was good from 29 yards and made it a 44-14 lead to push the running clock rule.  The 30-point margin was the seventh such scenario in eight wins for the Bombers this season.

Eagle's Landing (2-6) was held to 6-of-21 passing for 78 yards.  Running back Brandon Hood led ECLA with 129 yards rushing on 16 carries, including a 26-yard touchdown run.
The Long Blue Line begins its run to be the first OHSAA Division I program to repeat as state champions since 2015 (Lakewood St. Edward) on next Friday, Oct. 29.  Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.

"Tomorrow starts a whole new season," said Specht.  "We're 0-0 again.  Now, we can talk about a state championship.  All year long, we wanted to focus on winning the GCL South, which we did.  We focused on winning this last home game, as well.  It's about a state championship now.  There are 64 teams in the state of Ohio and we have a 1-in-64 chance of winning it all and that's our focus from here on out."

Expected to be played at RDI Stadium at Ballaban Field, St. Xavier's opening-round opponent has yet to be determined.
