Zach Vogelpohl is one of the most valued coaches on the St. Xavier staff. His education, experience with the program, and a commitment to helping athletes improve provide a comprehensive background. A 2012 honors graduate of St. X, Coach Vogelpohl returned a year later, this time on deck.
From his first day, it was clear to see that his time in the water had served him well. A focus on helping the newer swimmers develop a sound foundation technically and attitudinally is a hallmark of the Coach “Z” style. His positive approach enhances the aquatic experience.
A varsity swimmer for the Long Blue Lane, he excelled in sprint free and fly. His final season, he garnered 4 top eight finishes at the Fred Cooper District Memorial. Zach was also presented with the Fr. Bill Verbryke award, the program’s top honor.
Following graduation, Vogelpohl moved on to Xavier University where he earned his BS with honors in Biology. While at XU, he played water polo and served as VP of the club squad. However, his education and athletic pursuits were far from complete. Zach earned his masters degree from Kettering College in Dayton in the physician assistance program with a focus on orthopedics. He is currently on the staff of UC’s Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine, where he works alongside orthopaedic trauma surgeons.
Coach”MVZ” is also affiliated with the St. X. Water Polo and Triathlon programs. The “Tri-Athletes” have been Ohio Champions since 2017. Zach himself is an accomplished participant in that sport. His coaching credentials also include a six year tenure at the North Hills Swim Club.
Zach and his wife Ashley (a former field hockey coach at St. Ursula Academy) were married in the fall of 2019 and reside in Hyde Park. They are the proud parents of daughter, Lillie. The Vogelpohls are members of St. Mary’s parish.
