Box Score Football On 3-Game Winning Streak As They Power Past Withrow
On a beautiful Friday night, the St. Xavier varsity football team welcomed the Withrow Tigers to campus. When the two teams met last year on Withrow's terrority, the game was very close with a score of 14-10. This year, the Bombers demonstrated their dominance as they defeated Withrow at home 31-7.
The Bombers got on the board quickly thanks to a 2-yard rushing touchdown from junior
Daniel Vollmer. Moments later, Vollmer added to the total again with a 3-yard rushing touchdown to bring the Bombers to a 14-0 lead at the end of the 1st quarter. The 2nd quarter widened the score gap even further between the two teams when
Chase Herbstreit found
Daniel Vollmer yet again for a 23-yard passing touchdown (giving Vollmer all three scores on the night thus far).
The Bombers struck yet again in the half when Herbstreit connected with junior
Cameron Taylor for a 19-yard touchdown reception, putting the Bombers at a comfortable 28-0 lead. The Bombers capped off the first half with a 22-yard field goal from sophomore
Owen Davidson to make the score 31-0 at intermission.
Because of St. Xavier's 30+ point lead in the 2nd half, a running clock was issued for the remainder of the game. Late in the 4th quarter, the Withrow Tigers got on the board courtesy of a 6-yard passing touchdown. This brought the overall game score to 31-7.
In addition to last Friday's victory, St. Xavier alum Connor Buczek '11 was honored and inducted into the St. Xavier Sports Hall of Fame for his contributions to St. Xavier lacrosse and football. He is currently the head coach of the Men's Lacrosse team at Cornell University. Congrats to Connor on all of his achievements. #LongBlueLine
Sitting at an overall record of 3-1, St. Xavier hosts their first GCL game of the season vs. the Moeller Crusaders this Friday, September 20th at RDI Stadium & Ballaban Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00pm. Go Bombers!
