Basketball Downs Elder, Gears Up for OHSAA Playoffs

Basketball Downs Elder, Gears Up for OHSAA Playoffs

The St. Xavier basketball program closed out regular season and GCL play on a high note, Friday night, taking down the visiting Elder Panthers by a score of 39-36 in a traditional GCL slugfest.

Tied at 16 at the half, the Bombers took control in the 3rd quarter with a 13-7 advantage to take a 29-23 lead heading into the game's final quarter.

In the 4th, the Bombers got up by as much as seven before Elder stormed back to take a one-point lead with just under three minutes to play. The lead changed hands two more times before a Donovan Waleskowski three-pointer but the Bombers up 37-35, signifying the games final lead change.

Luke Klare provided a few key defensive stops to help the Bombers maintain their lead in the game's waning seconds as the Bombers were able to knockdown just enough free throws to keep their lead in tact. Elder had a heave as the buzzer sounded that fell short and the Bombers escaped with the three-point victory.

Jacob Wassler led all scorers with 15-points as the only Bomber to reach double figures. Waleskowski and Jake Britt each added seven points as well. Elder was led by the duo of Cam Williams (11 points) and Drew Murphy (10 points).

The win improved the Bombers' record to 16-6 on the year and 3-3 in the GCL, good for a second place finish. The second place finish is the Bombers' best in league play since they were co-champions in the 2020-2021 season.

Basketball moves into their second season as they find themselves in the South 3 Bracket for the OHSAA Sectional Tournament. Hosted by Fairfield High School, the Bombers will play next at 7:30 pm on Wednesday, February 28th where they will take on the winner of Lakota East and La Salle. Tickets can be found at ohsaa.org/tickets.
