Basketball Falls to Moeller, Bounces Back Against Lakota West

Bomber Basketball had the first of several Friday-Saturday double headers this weekend when they hosted Moeller on Friday night and welcomed Lakota West to campus Saturday night.

On Friday, it was a slow 2nd quarter that doomed the Bombers. Tied 11-11 after one, Moeller used a 14-4 advantage in the 2nd quarter to take a 25-15 halftime lead. The two teams played even up the rest of the way as the Bombers were able to pull only within seven midway through the 3rd quarter.

Donovan Waleskowski paced St. Xavier as the only Bomber in double figures, scoring 18-points on the night including 9 of the 11 Bomber points in the first quarter. Jacob Wassler added 8 points, 11 rebounds, and 3 blocks on the night as well. Moeller was led by the trio of Alex Kazanecki (14 points), Eric Mahaffey (10 points, 10 rebounds), and Kingston Land (11 points).

Saturday brought a departure from GCL play as the Bombers welcomed Lakota West for a non-conference tilt. St. Xavier controlled the first quarter, using six first quarter offensive rebounds to take a 14-8 advantage. Lakota West stormed back and took advantage of some tired Bomber legs in the middle two quarters, ultimately leading 43-36 heading into the 4th quarter.

Some inspired play from the Bombers in the fourth saw them chip away at the Firebird lead before finally taking back control of the game with two Kobe Clapper free throws to give the Bombers a two-point lead with 2:55 remaining in the game. Some sound defensive play from the Bombers and a 6-8 mark from the free throw line in the final quarter led to a 16-2 fourth quarter advantage and a 52-45 come from behind victory.

The inside duo of Jacob Wassler (14 points, 9 rebounds) and Gordy Sulfsted (11 points, 6 rebounds) led the Bomber offensive attack. Andrew Weber was up to his normal, stat stuffing ways as he finished with 6 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists.

The weekend split brings the Bomber record to 11-3 on the year and 1-1 in GCL play. They're back next weekend with another GCL/non-conference double header when the Bombers travel to Elder on Friday night before returning home to host Cincinnati College Prep Academy on Saturday at 3:30 and 5:00 pm. The Freshmen Bombers will take on Clark Montessori on Saturday at 2:00 pm. Ticket and live stream links for all of this weekend's action can be found on the Bomber Basketball schedule page.
