Basketball Opens GCL Play with Last Second Thriller

Basketball Opens GCL Play with Last Second Thriller

Winning a road game in the GCL is never an easy task, but Bomber Basketball was able to roll into La Salle and escape with a 54-53 victory thanks to some last second heroics from forward Jacob Wassler.

Emotions were high throughout the whole gym in head coach Ryan Fleming's return to La Salle where he was an '11 grad. The play on the court also exhibited that as both teams put out spirited efforts.

La Salle pounced on the Bombers early, scoring the game's first 11-points to take an 11-0 lead. The Bombers settled in, though, finishing the half on a 20-8 run to take a one-point halftime lead at 20-19.

St. Xavier remained in control for much of the second half until a fourth quarter that saw a majority of the game's 10 lead changes.

La Salle took the lead  at 49-48 with a put back dunk by Max Welter with 1:16 left, but the Bomber's Brayden Reilly quickly responded with an attack of the basket leading to two free throws and a 50-49 St. Xavier advantage with 51 seconds remaining.

La Salle's Dre Arnold wasted no time in getting to his spot for a jumper to put La Salle back in the lead 51-50. After a Wassler layup with 25 seconds remaining, Arnold went right back to work, giving La Salle a 53-52 lead with just 14 seconds left.

A Bomber timeout with 6 seconds gave them a side out from just near half court. After their initial play didn't pan out, Luke Klare found himself taking the go-ahead three with 2 seconds on the clock. Racing to the basket, Wassler corralled the rebound for the tip-in basket and a Bomber victory at 54-53.

Wassler's rebound and tip in gave him a game high 23-points, while adding 5 rebounds. Donovan Waleskowski chipped in another 15-points, including a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line. Brayden Reilly was also perfect from the free throw line, going 4-4 down the stretch. The Bombers as a team were 15-17 from the charity strike.

La Salle was led by Brady O'Connor (19 points) and Dre Arnold (15 points).

The win improves the Bombers' record to 9-2 on the year and now 1-0 in GCL play. They have a quick turnaround, heading to Trent Arena Monday afternoon to compete in the Flyin' to the Hoop Invitational. They're then right back to GCL play with a home showdown against rival Moeller Crusaders who are also 1-0 in GCL play after beating Elder at home Friday night.
