McCallie Downs Ohio Power St. Xavier, 34-11

McCallie Downs Ohio Power St. Xavier, 34-11

When it comes to tradition-rich high school football programs, it doesn't get much bigger than St. Xavier in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Bombers have won four Ohio state titles and one mythical national championship.

And the all-boys school of 1,400 (grades 9 through 12) brought 100 players with them to play McCallie on Friday night at the Blue Tornado's Spears Stadium.

Yet on this night anyway, the No. 2 team in the state of Tennessee according to MaxPreps looked pretty good against the Bombers, who came in as the No.4 team in Ohio.

With McCallie quarterback Jay St. Hillaire throwing three touchdown passes and the increasingly stout McCallie defense limiting St. X to 184 total yards, the Blue Tornado scored a stunning 34-11 victory to move to 3-0 on the season.

"I've followed St. X for a long time," said McCallie coach Ralph Potter. "I admire the way they run their program. We just really played well tonight. Jay threw the ball well, Carson Gentle was definitely Carson Gentle out there on defense,  The defensive secondary was really sound and the defensive line played well.. Good win."

It started almost from the opening kickoff. The Bombers fumbled shortly after that, De'Shun Tipton recovered and St. Hilaire hit Enrique Jaimes Leclair on a 24-yard TD pass with 9:24 to go. Elliott Arnold _ who also kicked field goals of 41 and 21 yards _ booted the first of his four extra points and McCallie led the visitors 7-0.

Then 24 seconds before the half, St. Hilaire hit Carson Lawrence on a four-yard TD  to the left corner of the end zone and the Blue Tornado was up 14-3 at intermission.

After that, it was sophomore Keeyshawn Tabuteau's turn to take over. He caught a 33-yard scoring pass from St. Hilaire less than two minutes into the second half to push the lead to 21-3. A 43-yard run down the right sideline less than six minutes later pushed the lead to 28-3.

St. X closed within 28-11 a few minutes later, but Arnold's two field goals in the final quarter pushed the margin back to the final score.

"I'm proud of it," said Gentle, the University of Tennessee commit. "This is a big win. I gave my all for the team tonight."

It was certainly a team effort. McCallie piled up 392 yards of offense to just 184 for St. Xavier. Tabuteau caught a touchdown and ran for another. Workhorse back Ja'Von McMahan bulled and bolted his way to 141 rushing yards on 21 carries.

McCallie moves to 3-0 with the win and travels to Memphis University School next Friday for Division II Class AAA game. St. Xavier falls to 2-1.
