Basketball Wins Smoky Mountain Winter Classic

Basketball Wins Smoky Mountain Winter Classic

Over Christmas break, the Bomber Basketball program traveled down to Gatlinburg, Tennessee to compete in the Smoky Mountain Winter Classic from December 28th to 30th.

The Bombers went a perfect 3-0, finishing as champions of the 8-team yellow bracket.

In the opener, the Bombers took down Murray High School out of Kentucky winning convincingly by a score of 75-49. The Bombers were led by Donovan Waleskowski and Kyle Conner's 18-points a piece, respectively. The duo was efficient going 14-19 from the field and 5-10 from beyond the arc. Tommy Googins and Jack DeCurtins each added in nine points each, while DeCurtins chipped in five assists.

In semifinal action, St. Xavier played their closest game of the tournament beating Alcoa High School (TN) by a score of 66-58. The Bombers raced out to a 14-point halftime lead only to see Alcoa make it a 2-point game late in the fourth quarter. Thanks to a game-high 26-points from Tommy Googins to pair with some clutch free throw shooting down the stretch, the Bombers prevailed to move into the championship game.

St. X took on Grace Christian Academy out of Franklin, Tennessee for the championship on 12/30. In what proved to be an up-and-down affair, the Bombers placed four in double figures en route to a 73-62 victory. Jack DeCurtins led all scorers with 17 points, adding five rebounds and seven assists for a complete game. Waleskowski followed with 15 points, Googins with 12 points, and Jacob Wassler finished with 10 points. As a team, the Bombers shot an astounding 28-47 (60%) from the field, including 10-18 from three (56%).

The trio of wins bring the Bomber record to 8-3 on the year. They open 2023 with a pair of games this upcoming weekend, including their GCL opener on January 6th. The Bombers travel to Moeller on 1/6 to take on the Crusaders in a highly anticipated matchup. Tickets will be available to the public here. Then, on Saturday, January 7th, the Bombers welcome Indian Hill to the Berning Gymnasium for a triple header of games. Tickets to that game can be bought here.
