HANG STRIKES GOLD – DIVERS SHINE AT DISTRICT

Gavin Hang [JR] won the Southwest District diving crown Tuesday, February 15 in dramatic come from behind fashion. Trailing going into his final and most difficult dive, Gavin threw down the highest score of the meet to leap into first place. His last effort was an inward 2 ½ somersault in tuck position and he nailed it, tallying 68.20 points. His total of 460.25 was a lifetime best and just ahead of Sycamore's Preston Landolt's 451.25. Both athletes scored substantially higher than a year ago. The top five divers from the District move on to the State competition in Canton next week.

Hang was not alone on the podium as David Gerth [JR] finished 7^th with 295.10 points. Freshman Joshua Garza claimed 16^th with 221.85 points. Joey Vasconcellos [FR] was also on the District squad. The total of 33 team points vaults the AquaBombers into first place entering Saturday's swimming portion of the meet.

Gavin's top finish was the first for a St. X diver since Andy Maggio won in 1999 with a 444.35 score.

COACHES' COMMENTS –

"Gavin and his teammates have improved dramatically and competed with the focus necessary to move up the diving ladder. The last dive for Gavin was tremendous and obviously timely," commented diving coach Brandon Unthank.

"I've had the opportunity to watch Gavin and David the past three years. It was exciting to witness such outstanding efforts. My congratulations," offered swim coach Tim Beerman.

"It is Diving and Swimming at St. X. We appreciate our divers and what commitment they have made," noted head coach Dave Albert.
