Bomber Basketball Notches Three Wins in Three Days

The St. Xavier High School basketball program competed in three games in three days this past weekend, going 3-0 in the process with wins over Western Hills, St. Henry (KY) and Springfield.

The Bombers welcomed Western Hills to the Berning Gymnasium on Friday and sent them home with an 86-63 defeat. The home team saw 12 players get their names in the scoring column, led by Donovan Waleskowski's 19-point effort. Tommy Googins and Jacob Wassler were the other two Bombers in double figures, each with 10-points apiece. Kyle Conner's 7 points, 4 assists, and 4 rebounds led a slew of five other Bombers to score at least 6-points in a balanced offensive attack.

Coach Mike Noszka's crew took to the road for the remainder of the weekend, first beating St. Henry (KY) by a score of 51-27 at Newport High School's John Turner Classic. Defense stole the show for the Bombers on Saturday as they gave up just 2-points over the first 10-minutes of the second half and just 11 points in the second half in total for the runaway victory. The Bombers were led this time by senior Jack DeCurtins and his 15-point performance. Waleskowski was the only other Bomber in double figures with 13-points.

To end the weekend, the Bombers traveled to Centerville High School to compete in the Elk Elite Showcase against Springfield High School. Trailing 10-8 after the first quarter, it was the Bomber defense that stifled the Wildcats, outscoring them 55-24 through the final three quarters. The Bombers' offensive attack was led by the sophomore duo of Waleskowski and Gordy Sulfsted, each with 18-points. Sulfsted added 10 rebounds to notch his first double-double of the year while Waleskowski grabbed 9 boards. Jack DeCurtins chipped in a solid all around games with 7 points, 5 assists, and 4 rebounds. Once again the Bomber defense tightened up after halftime, giving up just 11 points in the 2nd half.

The trio of wins move St. Xavier to 4-1 on the young season with still a handful of games to play before Christmas break. The Bombers travel to Hamilton on December 17th at 7:30 pm, take on Woodward at the Queen City Showcase hosted by Mount St. Joseph University on December 18th at 3:30 pm, and then host Fairfield on December 21st at 7:30 pm.
