Bomber Football Falls Short in Upset Bid

The St. Xavier High School football team met the Moeller Crusaders for their second matchup of the season, this time held at Norwood High School's Shea Stadium.

Entering as heavy favorites, the Crusaders jumped out to a 21-0 lead heading into intermission but the Bombers would certainly not go down without a fight.

An interception by Bless Sparks set the Bombers up and helped them get on the board with a 26-yard strike from Chase Herbstreit to Jamaal Sharp, bringing the score to 21-7.

With about 8:00 minutes remaining in the contest, the Bombers found themselves driving again as they looked to mount one final push. Herbstreit found Sharp once again with a heave from midfield - Sharp was able to jump over the Moeller defender to corral the pass and stride into the end zone. The play was negated due to an offensive pass interference call, leading the Bomber drive to ultimately stall.

Moeller received the punt and scored a rushing touchdown just two plays later, bringing the scoring to its conclusion at 28-7.

Herbstreit finished the game 13-22 for 123 yards while adding a touchdown and an interception. Sharp was his primary target, bringing in six catches for 67 yards and a touchdown. Gage Patrick handled the ground attack for the Bombers, rushing 22 times for 124 yards. Alex Divine paced the Bomber defense with 11 tackles on the night, while Sparks added eight tackles of his own to pair with his interception.

The Bombers finish the season with a 5-7 mark. For a full look of season stats, click here.
