Soccer Downs Moeller, Takes Control of GCL

Soccer Downs Moeller, Takes Control of GCL

After a 0-0 slugfest slightly under a month ago, St. Xavier and Moeller met last night for the second time this season in a match featuring major GCL implications.

Moeller entered the match with a two-point advantage over the Bombers on the season, leaving St. Xavier needing a victory to have any hope of another GCL championship.

The Crusaders got on the board first to take a 1-0 lead just ten minutes into the match. Fueled by a bevy of students backing their bench, the Bomber offense came alive to score two goals before intermission, taking a 2-1 lead at the half.

Zane Arar cleaned up a cross from James Jackson to tie the contest in the 17th minute and James Knight then gave the Bombers a 2-1 lead in the 24th minute with a missile from 25-yards out.

Trey Wynn opened up the scoring just two minutes into the second half, flying in to finish a cross from Daniel Campos, giving the Bombers a 3-1 lead in the process. The goal is Wynn's fourth in his last four games, and his sixth on the year.

After pulling within one at 3-2, Moeller found themselves with a penalty kick and a chance to tie the match. Standout goalkeeper Luke Eckert did just enough to throw off the Crusader, squashing the opportunity and preserving the victory as the Bombers were able to stave off any other Moeller attack.

The win propels St. Xavier to 11 points on the year, keeping Moeller at 10 points and moving them to second place. St. Xavier now sits in the driver's seat to win their third consecutive GCL championship when they travel to Elder on October 11th.

The Bombers will take a quick break from GCL play when they host Centerville for a matchup of two of the states top-ten teams. Centerville is currently 3rd in the state and St. Xavier sits at 7th. That match is set for 7:00 pm on Saturday, October 8th at RDI Stadium on the campus of St. Xavier High School. Get your tickets here!
