JESUIT JOUST GOES TO ST. XAVIER

JESUIT JOUST GOES TO ST. XAVIER

To close out the 2021 calendar year, the Long Blue Lane hosted our friendly Jesuit brothers from Cleveland St. Ignatius on December 30.  The renovated Keating Natatorium was a fitting venue for last year's first (St. X) and third (St. I) place teams at State.  The competition was at a high level with the Boys from Bomberville prevailing 196-89.

The AquaBombers won ten of the eleven events.  Highlighting the evening were the three top relays.  The 200 Medley (Chase Guenther [SR], Oscar Haverkamp [SR], Max Ward [SOPH], Logan Tobery [SR] touched first followed by the St. X "B" foursome of Chase Dillon [JR], Jaeger Ellerman [FR], Kyle Silvestain [JR], and Christopher Perera [SR].  The 200 Free Relay (Thackston McMullan [SOPH], Alex Ingram [SOPH], Will Froass [SR], Tobery) came from behind to out touch the Wildcats 1:25.57 (All-American consideration) to 1:25.95.  The 400 Free Relay saw Ingram, Luca Eckert [JR], Froass, and McMullan post an All-American consideration time with a winning time of 3:09.15.

In individual events, McMullan picked up gold in the 200 and 100 Frees.  Guenther topped the field in the 100 Fly and 100 Back.  Froass, Ingram and Ellerman were the other victors in the 200 IM, 500 Free and 100 Breast respectively.
A full JV meet was also contested.  Again the home team notched ten of eleven firsts.  Braydon Myers [JR] led the way with 3 (100 Fly, 200 Free Relay, 400 Free Relay.  In all, St. X had 160 swims and took advantage of the opportunity to race a quality opponent.  Mass preceded the meet and dinner followed, as all joined in a special way to celebrate our Jesuit traditions.

COACHES' COMMENTS –

"We attempted to blend spirituality, collegiality and quality competition into the event.  We are extremely grateful to all who made this day possible.  St. Ignatius is a class act and their effort to make the trip was appreciated," commented head coach Dave Albert.

"When we have the chance to race, we are optimistic that our guys will combine their training with a focused approach to each race.  Such an attitude was on display against St. I," offered assistant coach Matt Normile.

"Our Christmas training is demanding.  However, it's a necessary element in our growth.  Another key element is our ability to step up and throw it down.  It was a meaningful meet," analyzed assistant head coach Jim Brower.

"The traditions of St. Ignatius and St. Xavier are rich and deep.  Bringing the two institutions together in this way was another Christmas present," noted assistant head coach Tom Keefe.
