ST. XAVIER AQUABOMBERS HOIST GCL TROPHY FOR 77TH TIME

ST. XAVIER AQUABOMBERS HOIST GCL TROPHY FOR 77TH TIME

It is a remarkable achievement to win a GCL title in any sport.  The quality of the GCL is legendary around the State.  On Wednesday, January 26th, the Long Blue Lane stepped up and threw down one great swim after another to earn the program's 77th league title – 62nd consecutive.  The championship was held at Keating Natatorium.  To put the winning streak in historical perspective, it began the first year that St. X called Finneytown home.  Keating Natatorium would be added to the campus in 1969.

While the swimming portion of the GCL wrapped up on Wednesday, the divers will finalize the meet Saturday, January 29 at Keating Aquatic Center (UC).  However, the current score locks up the title:
  • St Xavier - 431
  • Moeller - 282
  • Elder - 225
  • LaSalle - 118
The home team got off to a great start winning five of the first seven events.  The 200 Medley Relay led from start to finish in a tight race with Moeller.  Chase Dillon [JR], Rowan Donovan [SR], Ocean Isham [SOPH], Luke Mangano [SOPH] all posted lifetime bests.  The 200 Freestylers Adam Wade [JR], Dave Fogler [JR], Braydon Myers [JR], Liam Bien [FR] went 1 – 4 to rack up another 52 points, once again all lifetime bests.  Dillon was back on top of the podium in the 50 Free, followed by Mangano in the 100 Fly and Fogler in the 500 – lifetime bests.  The final win came as the 400 Free Relay of Henry Stimson [FR], Bien, Gino Eckert [FR] and Wade swam away with a four second victory over a quality Elder foursome.

Nine AquaBombers earned first team honors
Swimming to second team accolades were: Every performance scored and every athlete produced a lifetime best.  Drew Held, a senior from Moeller, picked up wins in the 100 Free (new record) and the 100 Back.  He was the only dual individual gold medalist.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS –
  • 96% Season Bests (100% had at least one)
  • 86% Lifetime Bests (100% had at least one)
  • 29 swims would have qualified for Districts last year
  • "Classes of Distinction" – Seniors (5), Juniors (7), Sophomores (2), Freshmen (4)

COACHES' COMMENTS -

"Coaches Beerman and Counts did a fantastic job in preparing our athletes for the GCL.The window for the taper was very tight. But, they certainly brought it together.Winning the GCL is a significant achievement.Congratulations to athletes, coaches and some great competitors for an outstanding evening," offered head coach Dave Albert.

"The GCL is indeed a very special event. For those of us who played a role in preparing the swimmers, it was a gratifying experience. We had a diverse group with which to work, but one thing was certainly shared, the ability to race well," noted coach Tim Beerman.

"In my many years of being part of the GCL, it never disappoints from a competition stand point. All came with spirit and intensity. We're delighted to be able to keep number 77 at Keating," commented assistant head coach Jim Brower.

"When every one of our guys produces a lifetime best, that certainly validates how hard the swimmers and coaches have been working. In addition, the place was rocking and that adds and important element to what occurred at historic Keating Natatorium," summarized assistant head coach Tom Keefe.
