JV INVITATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS SPECIAL DAY

JV INVITATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS SPECIAL DAY

Saturday was anything but ordinary for sports fans in Cincinnati.  Not only were the Bengals in action, but the St. Xavier swimmers were at it from dawn to dusk at Keating Natatorium.  Beginning with regular morning practice, the AquaBombers then hosted the annual JV Invitational with Ursuline Academy.  Begun in the 2000 – 2001 season by coach Tim Beerman, the event offers athletes from several schools the opportunity to participate in a quality meet under the bright lights.  A full house was on hand to add to the excitement.

37 members of the Long Blue Lane were entered and showed remarkable spirit in the stands and tremendous performances in the pool.  Many had their first taste of longer events and were impressive indeed.  Freshmen Nick Rucker, Cooper Stenken and Johnathan Naylor racked up multiple top eight finishes:
  1. Rucker:  200 Medley Relay [3rd], 100 Free [2nd], 200 Free Relay [5th], 100 Breast [6th]
  2. Stenken:  200 Medley Relay [3rd], 200 IM [2nd], 100 Fly [3rd], 200 Free Relay [4th]
  3. Naylor:  200 Medley Relay [3rd], 200 IM [7th], 200 Free Relay [4th], 400 Free Relay [5th]

Other double top eight individuals were:
  • Alex Perry – JR:  200 Free [5th], 100 Fly [6th]
  • Gabe Castellini- FR:  50 Free [4th], 100 Back [7th]
  • Will Moran – FR:  50 Free [7th], 500 Free [5th]

While no team score was kept, 33 of 37 of the "Men in Blue" had top 16 finishes.  Mason, Oxford Talawanda, and LaSalle joined St. X on the guys side, while Ursuline competed against Mason, Oxford Talawanda, St. Ursula and Turpin.

COACHES' COMMENTS
"What Tim Beerman started over two decades ago is very special.  It was a terrific event for our athletes, coaches and dozens of volunteers.  From start to finish, we had many outstanding performances," reflected head coach Dave Albert.

"It is truly meaningful to see our guys accept new challenges and produce lifetime bests.  Extremely gratifying to share the day with guys who are willing to do what is necessary to improve," noted coach Zach Vogelpohl.

"Our swimmers were ready to race and the support from their teammates, fans and coaches enhanced their efforts.  Last season we were not able to conduct the JV Invite, this year we all shared a special afternoon.  It furthered our ability to assess where we are and where we're headed," summarized coach Matt Normile.
