The Long Blue Lane Christens Keating Natatorium With Event Victory Over Elder

The Long Blue Lane Christens Keating Natatorium With Victory Over Elder

The renovated Keating Natatorium had its "baptism by fire" Thursday, December 2 in a dual meet with GCL rival Elder.  St. X prevailed 189 – 98.  The friendly confines of this historic facility proved to be a great venue for the 2021-22 opener.  The home squad captured 9 of the 11 races, including all relays and freestyle events.  The AquaBombers and Panthers were joined by St. Ursula and Seton to enhance the environment.  The new scoreboard was on display and live streaming broadened the scope for spectators.

Leading the way for the Men in Blue were multiple individual winners:  Will Froass [SR] (50 Free, 100 Free) and Oscar Haverkamp [SR] (200, 500 Free).  Senior River Stanford-Kososki and Junior Adam Wade swam to their first varsity wins in the 100 Back and 100 Breast respectively.  Froass was joined by Nick Wolfe [SR], Chase Dillion [JR], and Alex Ingram [SO] to earn the gold in the 200 Medley Relay.  He, Wolfe, Haverkamp and Ben Trujillo [JR] earned a come from behind triumph in the 400 Free Relay.  Trujillo, Wade, Dillon and Ingram claimed the 200 Free Relay.

Elder was represented by and enthusiastic 38 athletes, while the AquaBombers used 39.  92% of the team produced lifetime best performances.  Bill Keating, Jr., who passed away in 2017, provided a lasting legacy for this particular "showdown", as he coached at both St. X and Elder.  Keating is in the St. X Hall of Fame along with his father, Bill Keating Sr., uncle Charlie Keating, Sr. and cousin Charlie Keating III.

COACHES' COMMENTS

"After witnessing such an energetic and productive meet was inspiring.  We had the opportunity to expose our athletes to quality competition and a marvelous environment.  I certainly was pleased and gratified," reflected head coach Dave Albert.
"We were able to include a group of swimmers who run the gambit from novice to All-Americans.  They all raced with intensity and supported their teammates throughout.  I was honored to be a part of it," offered coach Don DiGiacomo.

"There are so many aspects that contribute to our program.  They certainly came together against Elder.  Our athletes, fellow competitions, fans, officials and coaches delivered a special opportunity to celebrate our sport," noted hall of fame assistant head coach Jim Brower.

"Coming off the New World Championship and Blue and White meets, we are never sure how we will respond.  No doubt it was a very satisfying evening and a good way to honor the "Keeper of the Flame", Bill Keating, Jr.", concluded assistant head coach Tom Keefe.
