Annually, the St. Xavier Swimming team faces Lakota East and Lakota West in a championship format that requires the AquaBombers to split into Blue & White squads.  This year, at the renovated Keating Natatorium, the tradition continued.  The final tally saw the St. X Blue finish on top (185 points), St. X White runner-up (154 points), Lakota East third (95 points) and Lakota West (64 points).

Close races permeated the evening as the Long Blue Lane captured ten of eleven events, going 1 – 4 in the 200 IM (Thackston McMullan [SOPH], Chase Guenther [SR], Christopher Perera [SR], Kyle Silvestain [JR], 100 Fly (Luca Eckert [JR], Nick Stroh [JR], Nate Stieger [SR], Gino Eckert [FR]), 100 Back (McMullan, Perera, Luca Eckert, Stroh) and 100 Breast (Nate Stieger [SR], Max Ward [SOPH], Silvestain, Gino Eckert).

McMullan was joined by Senior Logan Toberty in claiming two individual golds (200 and 500 Free).  Tobery was also part of the victorious 200 Free relay joined by Ward, Ben Trujillo [JR], and Levi Shooner [SR] and the 400 Free relay, partnering with Shooner, Taylor Martin [SOPH] and Perera.  The top Medley saw Luca Eckert, Guenther, Perera, Ward touch first.  The home team went 1 – 2 in all relays.

Shooner (50 Free), Luca Eckert (100 Fly), and Stieger (100 Breast) notched individual wins.  It was Stieger's first varsity triumph with the Swimming/Diving program.

But a fuller analysis reveals that 27 athletes represented St. X posted 86% season best times and 57% lifetime bests.  Particularly impressive were Tyler Bush [FR] and Jackson Cornwall [SOPH] who both went 4 for 4 in career bests.

COACHES' COMMENTS 

"We continue to learn as we train and race.  The officials and our volunteer parents do such a great job running our home meets.  Keating Natatorium is a special venue," observed head coach Dave Albert.

"It is gratifying to see how far the younger swimmers have come in five weeks.  Their contributions enhance the overall performance of the Long Blue Lane," reflected coach Zach Vogelpohl.

"The learning process of our sport continues.  Equally important is how we develop as teammates," noted coach Matt Normile.

"We truly enjoy hosting the Lakotas and their coaches, Dennis Beck and Dick Hamilton.  We are blessed to compete with such first class athletes," concluded assistant head coach Tom Keefe.
