Canton Christmas Invitational Presents Opportunities for AquaBombers
 
A trip north to Canton has always proven to be special for the St. Xavier Swimming and Diving program.  The early December Christmas Invitational held Saturday, December 11 at historic C. T. Branin Natatorium, offered an excellent opportunity for the Long Blue Lane to assess their quality and depth.  A field of 26 teams from around the State competed in a prelim/final format.  While a team score was not kept, the guys from "Bomberville" stepped up and threw down some impressive peformances and swam away with wins in six of the eleven events.

Highlighting the efforts were victories in all three relays.

200 Medley Relay – Chase Guenther [SR], Oscar Haverkamp [SR], Thackson McMullan [SOPH]
        Will Forass [SR]   1:35.84
200 Free Relay -   Logan Tobery [SR], Kyle Silvestain [JR], Max Ward [SOPH], Froass  1:27.92
400 Free Relay -  Tobery, Alex Ingram [SOPH], Luca Eckert [JR], McMullan   3:09.62
 
All three final times are currently tops in Ohio.

McMullan also claimed gold in the 100 Fly and 500 Free.  Tobery was first to the wall in the 100 Free.

But the story of the meet would not be complete without a deeper look at the total squad's results.  29 AquaBombers made the trip and 24 earned a spot in finals.  Additional "A" finalists included:

Will Froas – 200 IM, 100 Free

Jaeger Ellerman [FR] – 200 IM, 100 Breast
Logan Tobery – 50 Free, 100 Free
Thackston McMullan – 100 Fly, 500 Free
Chase Guenther – 100 Fly, 100 Back
Nick Stroh [JR] – 500 Free
Chase Dillon [JR] – 100 Back
Oscar Haverkamp – 100 Breast
 
The final tally shows 45 total swims in finals:

"C"  9

  • Prelims – 88% Season Best Times (97% of athletes had at least 1)
  • Finals – 39% Season Best Times (54% of athletes had at least 1)

COACHES' COMMENTS –

"An extremely important event to have on the schedule.  Swimming at the site of the State meet in a prelim/final format gives us valuable information as we move on with our training and evaluating our guys," analyzed head coach Dave Albert.

"It's no secret Canton is my home and is filled with great memories and experiences.  From a St. Xavier standpoint, it's another step in our development as a team, "observed assistant head coach Jim Brower.

"Getting a chance to get the swimmers on the blocks and racing in this environment is invaluable.  We continue to learn and make adjustments in and out of the pool," summarized assistant coach Eric Bressinger.
