Box Score In a much anticipated 2020 debut, an aggressive offense and opportunistic defense allowed St. Xavier to lead much of the night, but unfortunate miscues down the stretch resulted in a 30-24 overtime loss at Brownsburg (Ind.) on ESPN2.
In his first career start, quarterback
Brogan McCaughey completed 18-of-25 attempts for 191 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the first half. The junior signalcaller finished 26-of-38 passing for 252 yards with two touchdowns and a pair of interceptions.
Senior linebacker
Matthew Devine led the Bombers defense with 13 tackles. Devine's 13 stops, include a career-high five tackles for loss. Junior
Eli Kirk totaled 12 tackles and intercepted a Brownsburg pass in the waning moments of regulation to send the game to overtime.
Kirk forced a fumble on special teams that was scooped by
Alex Kemper and returned for a score. Kemper's 20-yard fumble return for touchdown extended the St. Xavier lead to 24-10 with 11:44 remaining in the fourth quarter.
St. Xavier's defense forced three turnovers and limited a highly touted Brownsburg offense twice inside the Red Zone. A stop on fourth and one from the 13 kept the St. X lead at 7-3 early in the second quarter.Â
The Bombers marched 60 yards over eight plays in their first possession of the season, capped by
Mason Rohmiller's field goal from 33 yards to take an early 3-0 lead.
Charles Kellom totaled five receptions for 30 yards, highlighted by a 16-yard touchdown catch and dash to the end zone that gave the Long Blue Line a 10-0 lead with 1:59 to go in the opening quarter. Kellom led the rushing attack with 26 yards on 18 carries.
Liam Clifford led the Bombers with nine receptions for 125 yards.Â
Jalen Patterson snagged seven passes for 54 yards, including a 12-yard score that opened up a 17-3 lead 23 seconds prior to halftime.Â
The No. 3-ranked team in Indiana, Brownsburg moves to 2-0. St. Xavier starts the season 0-1.
St. Xavier looks to get in to the win column at La Salle next Friday, Sept. 4 in the annual matchup for North Bend Road bragging rights. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
