Bombers Throttle Crusaders, 45-14

CINCINNATI – Brogan McCaughey connected on four touchdown passes to lead St. Xavier to a 45-14 victory over Moeller in the quarterfinal round of the OHSAA Division I, Region IV playoffs.

Head coach Steve Specht said, "I thought that first half – take away the opening kickoff return –we played really well, offensively and defensively."

Moeller responded by taking the ensuing kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown to tie the game at 7-7 with 8:42 to go in the first quarter.

St. X notched three more touchdowns in the first quarter including another touchdown pass to Clifford – a 17-yard reception.  Jalen Patterson's 14-yard catch and run and Charles Kellom's 20-yard touchdown dash.

Kellom added another rushing touchdown in the second quarter and Terrell McFarlin's 33-yard touchdown reception through the middle of the Crusanders' defense with 56 seconds left in the first half marked the sixth touchdown drive on as many possessions.

Clifford totaled five receptions for 71 yards and two touchdowns. Luke Vransky added five receptions for 75 yards, to go along with 33 yards on four carries.

After sitting out last week's contest, McCaughey totaled 19-of-25 passing for 272 yards and four touchdowns.  St. Xavier did not throw a pass in the second half.

The Bombers' allowed 33 yards on the ground and 36 yards through the air in the first half.  A fumble recovery with 27 seconds to play in the first half stopped any momentum from changing going in to the locker rooms.

Eli Kirk led the defense with a team-high seven tackles, including two for loss.  Gabriel DuBois notched three tackles and forced a fumble that Alex Kemper recovered on the St. Xavier two yard line.

Mason Rohmiller added to his season resume with a career-long 42-yard field goal in the third quarter that capped the Bombers' scoring.  The kicker is 37-of-37 on point-after attempts.

"This is a collective team effort and I'm really proud of the kids," Specht said. "They've done a great job through COVID and they've gotten better every week. We ask them for their personal best and that's all we care about it. If they give us that we'll be OK."

Moeller (2-6) added a score with 7:09 left in the fourth quarter on a 28-yard pass to set the final tally, at 45-14.

The win marked the second time St. Xavier defeated Moeller in the past three weeks.  Outright champion of the GCL South, St. Xavier won the regular-season matchup 43-14 on Sept. 25.

St. Xavier continues its season against another GCL South rival when it hosts Elder on Friday, Oct. 23 in Regional Semi-finals.  Kick off from Ballaban Field is set for 7 p.m.
